This April we will be celebrating and encouraging 4-Hers to be True Leaders in Service. This month will culminate in a National 4-H Day of Service on April 29, 2017. This webinar will explain the concept, how to be involved, and what resources are available. 4-H professionals who have organized statewide and local participation in a 4-H Day of Service will provide examples of how to plan and implement appropriate service opportunities.  There will also be a time to discuss and answer questions about preparing for this True Leaders in 4-H experience.

It’s that time of year that states are beginning the national awards process. Army, Navy, and Air Force support the NAE4-HA 4-H Military Partnership Award – one of the Specialty Awards presented at the annual NAE4-HA conference. Please consider nominating yourself or an NAE4-HA member in your state who is doing an exceptional job in supporting the 4-H Military Partnership work. I know there are many deserving people working on behalf of the partnership.

Here’s the link to the Awards information on the NAE4-HA website. There is a description of the 4-H Military Partnership award under the Specialty Awards.

The process begins at the state level. Recipients who win at the state level go to the National level for selection of the national award winner. A plaque is presented at the conference and travel expenses to the conference are covered up to $1,200.

The deadline to submit applications is March 1, 2017.

This competition challenges teams of 4-H members to create a dish using only a predetermined set of ingredients. From these ingredients, team members must identify and prepare a dish, then make a presentation about it to the judges.

Chatham County 4-H entered a team of senior 4-H’ers (The Savannah Roses), that participated in the Georgia 4-H Food Challenge competition on September 10, 2016 at Rock Eagle. The team placed 2^nd in the state and had the opportunity to compete at the national level in Dallas, Texas.

The team, composed of military 4-H’ers Amari McDonald, Anna Morris and Katie Fenno, traveled to Texas in October to compete. Forty-two youth from six different states participated in the 3rd Annual National 4-H Food Challenge Contest in October 2016. The Savannah Roses came out smelling like roses when they placed 4th in the nation.

We are pleased to introduce the 2017 4‑H National Youth Science Day challenge: Incredible Wearables.

Developed by University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Incredible Wearables is a hands-on STEM project that challenges young people to build a wearable fitness tracker that will help people lead healthier lifestyles.

To complete the challenge, kids must work together to design, build and refine a wearable health-tracking device that is low-cost, easy-to-use and aesthetically appealing.

Incredible Wearables is perfect for both classroom and out-of-school learning. The 75 to 90-minute hand-on project is highly adaptable and is suitable for 4th-12th graders.

Each low-cost kit can serve up to 10 youth at a time, and is re-usable.

4‑H NYSD Celebrates 10 Years!
Celebrating its tenth year, 4‑H NYSD will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. The annual STEM initiative will engage tens of thousands of youth across the country to perform the same science challenge on the same day.

The Navy 4-H Military Partnership is pleased to announce the locations for Navy STEAM Specialty Camps for 2017. These camps provide opportunities for Navy teens to be exposed to professional and industry standards of educational and recreational activities that could lead to possible career paths or future leisure in the varying activities. They also promote healthy, lifelong hobbies and provide teens with opportunities to make friends, reduce stress, and stay active during the summer. Here are the exciting, engaging camps being offered this summer.

The University of Florida will host Adventures on the Emerald Coast at 4-H Camp Timpoochee in July. Youth will gain a technological edge and experience marine biology from the microscopic plankton all the way to the majestic dolphins seen from camp shores. Youth will be exposed to a culture of innovation while learning the scientific process and exploring potential careers in marine science and robotics.

The University of Georgia will host Barrier Islands of Coastal Georgia at the Burton 4-H Center in July. Youth will gain an appreciation for and understanding of the barrier islands’ role in supporting human and wildlife. Youth will explore and compare multiple habitats, explore the economic development of these areas, challenge their own understanding of barrier islands, and challenge themselves.

The University of Maine will host Wind Power at Tanglewood 4-H Camp in June.  Youth will explore concepts of energy and motion with a focus on wind power. The teens will travel to the Composites Lab on campus for a hands-on experience with wind turbine design and to a wind power farm which powers homes in a nearby town. Youth will also have the opportunity to enjoy many of the treasures that make Maine in summer special including a weekend campout and time to explore the iconic coastal town of Camden.

Clemson University in South Carolina will host a camp on the Clemson campus in June focused on DNA analysis and its role in kinship, disease diagnoses, health risk, and use in the criminal justice system. In addition to the professional and educational opportunities, the teens will be participating in recreational and cultural activities such as white water rafting and hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Washington State University will host Kayaking and Marine Science Adventure Camp at the YMCA Camp Seymour in Gig Harbor in June. The teens will experience marine science hands on while paddling and camping in the Puget Sound. The camp fosters stewardship of parks and outdoor spaces by learning about current threats and meeting people who are working to protect these spaces. They will meet with a park ranger and a representative from Taylor Shellfish to learn about careers related to marine science and learn what industry and government are doing to protect the Puget Sound in Washington State.

The Air Force 4-H Partnership is pleased to announce the state that will provide Air Force Youth Camps for youth of Active Duty, Air Guard, and Air Force Reserve service members. Additional information about the camps along with marketing materials will e posted on the 4-H Military Partnerships website in April.

What is Military REACH?

Military REACH successfully provides policymakers, community leaders, educators, youth development professionals, and others access to relevant and current research, training, and coaching tools to support children, youth, and their families.

With the recent release of an updated website, Military REACH will be sending alerts when new research or training and coaching tools are available on the website. Military REACH maintains a growing online library of current research related to military families.
