American Ethnic Studies Friends and Alumni Newsletter

Dear Friends and Alumni of K-State’s American Ethnic Studies Department!

At this time of dramatic changes to our American Ethnic Studies Department, we want to establish regular communication with those with a connection to American Ethnic Studies. In future news bulletins we would like to highlight the work of American Ethnic Studies Alumni and Friends, as well as keep you informed of our work.

As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our founding this year, our unit crosses new milestones. We begin the new decade with five tenure track faculty members, a first! In the last year alone, our faculty members have made research presentations in Mexico, Morocco, the Netherlands, Cuba, Canada, and the United States. Our recent majors have all either gone on to graduate study or found jobs in a wide range of fields. Locally we collaborate with community, civic, business, and religious groups. From that engagement has emerged the Manhattan Black Elders Project and the Mexican Manhattan Oral History Project.

As K-State’s flagship unit on race and ethnicity, we work very hard to serve as the engine of intellectual diversity on campus, and as the training site for students who will create a harmonious and respectful multicultural society. Students frequently refer to our Introduction to American Ethnic Studies course as “life-changing.”

Please take a moment to communicate with us: send us your story, tell us something about your time at K-State and beyond. Also, please view our new promotional video and pass it on to your contacts!

Additionally, would be honored to welcome you and acknowledge you at our AMETH Welcome Back BBQ Dinner on Tuesday September 19, Bluemont Room (Student Union), 6pm. It’s free. Please RSVP to rcnorris@ksu.edu.

We look forward to hearing from you!
With best wishes,

Yolanda Broyles-González
Head, American Ethnic Studies Department
University Distinguished Professor
