Jason Scuilla is the 2017 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist. Each year museum supporters commission a printmaker or photographer to produce a limited edition print for sale to the public. The program, which began in 1934, recognizes outstanding contemporary artists associated with Kansas.

Voices: A conversation with works of art that articulate the Black experience in America

Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous

The Leonardo Art Science Evening Rendezvous, or LASER, is a national program of evening gatherings that bring artists and scientists together for informal presentations and conversation with an audience. Speaker at this event will be: Philippe Pasquier, Associate Professor, School of Interactive Arts and Technology, Simon Fraser University.

Presentation by artist Damon Davis, 2017 TED Fellow. See how YOU can enhance the experience

Reception to follow at Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art

Damon Davis started the All Hands on Deck project as part of the Black Lives Matter movement in his home city, St. Louis. The project honors “that diverse collective dedicated to protecting our human rights, no matter race, age, or gender.” Davis will discuss All Hands on Deck and screen excerpts from his documentary Whose Streets?, which was included in the US Documentary category of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

After Michael Brown was shot to death by police in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9, 2014. Damon Davis, a native of nearby East St. Louis, joined the protests against the shooting and started photographing the upraised hands of his fellow activists. Presented by Keli Rylance, head, Morse Department of Special Collections, K-State Libraries. In 2016, K-State Libraries processed the personal archive of veterinary specialist Col. Frank Caldwell Hershberger. The collection documents his remarkable life: his travels, horsemanship, and service in two world wars.

A reading with discussion by Janice N. Harrington

Learn about the work of African-American folk artist, Horace H. Pippin. What did it mean to be an African-American soldier during World War I? What was life like for African-American families at the turn of the century? After a lively, interactive audience-driven discussion of paintings by Horace H. Pippin, Harrington will share poetry and reflections on the life and art of this astonishing painter.

K-State Libraries; Department of American Ethnic Studies; and Department of English. Reception to follow.

Classes and Workshops

The Museum hosts a variety of classes and workshops throughout
the year for all ages!

Spring 2017 ARTSmart Programs:

“Math/Art Connections”: Classes will focus math concepts – shape, form, space, etc. Each class includes gallery discussion and activities and an art project that will allow participants to explore media and techniques.
