Voices: Art Linking Asia and the West
December 4, 2018–December 21, 2019
This exhibition is part of the Beach Museum of Art’s yearlong program Silk Road through Kansas. A section of the permanent collection galleries will highlight the exchange of aesthetics and ideas between East and West through objects made by artists who traveled between the two regions. This project is a collaboration between curator Aileen June Wang and University of Kansas art history professors Sherry Fowler and Maki Kaneko. Area museums are participating in “Silk Road through Kansas” with similarly themed exhibitions! Check the websites of the following museums for dates and details: Spencer Museum of Art, Mulvane Art Museum, Ulrich Museum of Art.

The Beach Museum of Art and K-State Theatre collaborate to bring performance artist Dan Kwong

The Beach Museum of Art is collaborating with K-State Theatre to bring Los Angeles-based performance artist/storyteller Dan Kwong to campus as part of its Silk Road through Kansas program.
Dan is offering Writing/Performance Workshop, Gallery Talk, and One-Man Show.

Two-night workshop, Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 7-10 pm and Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 7-10 pm in the Purple Masque Theatre.
This participatory workshop is open to ALL students across campus, limit 16. Dan is particularly looking for a diverse mix of students across curricular areas and nationalities/identities to participate in his 2-night workshop. Students need not have experience in storytelling or performance to participate.
In this workshop students will learn how to develop personal stories using physical, vocal, conceptual, and emotional exercises designed to evoke stories and memories.
If you are a K-State student interested in the workshop and available, please email Theatre Program Associate Director Jennifer Vellenga [vellenga@ksu.edu] with the subject line, DAN KWONG.

Gallery Walk with Dan Kwong and Aileen June Wang, Thursday, Nov. 29 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Beach Museum of Art. Please join Dan Kwong and Aileen June Wang for an informal discussion in the exhibition “Culture Mixmaster Zhang Hongtu.” Kwong’s work as a writer and performance artist addresses cultural and gender identities, especially as they relate to Asian American men. Wang is the curator of the exhibition “Culture Mixmaster Zhang Hongtu.” On view September 25-December 22, 2018.

Silk Road through Kansas: Dan Kwong, Purple Masque Theatre, Friday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. Dan will perform his solo work, It’s Great 2B American, free and open to the public. PG-13 for language and adult subject matter.

Dan Kwong’s residency at K-State is co-hosted by the K-State Theatre Program and the Beach Museum of Art.

The events are organized in partnership with the K-State Asian American Student Union.
