New Roles at the Office

Well, I have been writing news articles for two years now. I cannot believe I have been here that long! I do have some exciting news to share with you though!

I am switching roles here in our office and our office is switching roles for my old job! How cool is that?

I will be a Family and Consumer Sciences Agent still, but I get to specialize in my programing. I will be specializing in Human Development and managing our 4-H program!

What does that mean? Well, I will be providing programing in our county that relates to youth, family, and community development. I will focus on stronger families, helping youth grow up to be amazing adults, and helping our community grow in the potential it can! Continue reading “New Roles at the Office”

Children’s Book Day

April 2nd is International Children’s Book Day and is also Hans Christian Anderson’s Birthday. Each year a different country sponsors the event and picks a theme for that day. Last year was Russia and the theme was “Let Us Grow with the Book”.

I think this is a great day to not only read to your children, but to teach them about different cultures. You could explain that Russia is sponsoring this event and give some brief insight to who Russia even is and where they are.

Bringing culture into your growing child helps their prospective of the world broaden and for them to be more aware of different people/things. By doing this your child can grow as a person and when older they will be able respect the people that are different than themselves.

Also reading to your child is a great thing! Sometimes it takes a while, but that is how picture books are set up. They are set up to let your child look at the pictures and use their imagination while you are reading; hence all the questions they ask as you are reading. As they get older and read books with fewer pictures, they use their imagination in a different way and actually picture the pictures! It is amazing isn’t it?

So remember Sunday April 2nd, read to your child for International Children’s Book Day! It will not only let you bond with your child, but it will help them grow!

Teen Dating Violence Awareness

February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and in honor of that, I thought I would talk about teens and dating relationships.

Teens are starting to have dating relationships sooner rather than later and we as adults need to teach them how to show respect in a relationship and treat each other in a healthy way.

So what is a healthy relationship when it comes to a teen? It looks similar to an adult healthy relationship, but with a lot more respect. Teens are at a vulnerable age where they are trying to figure themselves out and to do that they will try anything! They will try every sport, music trend, fashion trend, driving fast, talking back, etc. They are learning what they like, what they don’t like and what they really hate during their teenage years. When it comes to a dating relationship, teens need to trust their partners and respect their partner’s decisions if it doesn’t match their own.

We as adults need to teach them how to speak up for what they want, how to compromise with their dating partner, how to be supportive, and how to respect their partner’s privacy. The last one is a major one. Teens can become infatuated when in a dating relationship and can forget that their dating partner needs space sometimes. I know my husband needs space from me sometimes, but the difference is that I do not have a teenage brain anymore and I understand that is normal. Sometimes teens do not understand that and will constantly text their dating partner.

How can we teach teens these important dating “rules”? By talking to them and demonstrating it in our relationships. Teens watch us every day and mimic what we do, so we need to pay attention to what we are teaching our future generations.

Relationship Building

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day I have a few ways to better your relationship with your partner. Relationships are hard and they take time and constant work. Try to make these ideas a habit for your relationship and you will be on a better path.

Friendship is a powerful thing when it comes to relationships. Being able to talk freely and honestly with your partner is important. Share you day with your partner. Let them know what angered you, what went well and what went wrong. Sometimes it is great to just get your problems off your chest. Make sure to thank them when they do something for you. For example, “Thank you for washing my car,” “Thanks for taking out the trash.” We all get busy and forget to say thank you, I know I do sometimes; that is why it is very important. Kansas Day

This Monday is Kansas Day! The best way to celebrate it is to take your family to visit some Kansas History!

We have a ton of places in Kansas rich with history. I have picked a few of my favorites plus a few I have not heard of to give you some ideas!

First of all in Manhattan (only a 2-hour drive) there is the National Tall Grass Prairie Preserve. You can walk the trails and see some great views at the Kanza Prairie, located in the Preserve. It is a really cool experience to walk the trails!

In Wichita you have a few things. There is Cow Town and the Exploration Place. Both are always changing with exhibits and would be fun to see what’s new.

Go to Lindsborg! Here you will experience a Swedish culture and visit their Dala horses! Also the McPherson County Mill museum is there, along with the Small World Gallery, and great Swedish food!

Fort Scott has a great museum called the Fort Scott Frontier Roots. This would be a bit of a road trip, but it is beautiful country along the way. Also there are a few Civil War Battle Fields you can stop at on the way.

Last, in Salina you can visit the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure. You get to stroll past 100+ animals here! Also you can count the spots on a leopard or see unusual markings on the baboons!

These are only a few things you can do in Kansas! The main thing to do is get out and visit Kansas with your family, these will be the memories they remember!
