Washington Receives National Fellowship to Become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer

Shai Washington, senior in political science and international studies, was selected as one of 10 students nationally to receive a 2015 Thomas R. Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship with the U.S. State Department.

The fellowship, administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, provides financial support for a student’s senior year as an undergraduate and their first year of graduate school. In addition, students participate in one domestic internship and one overseas internship; receive mentoring from Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. State Department; and after completing a master’s degree, are expected to become Foreign Service Officers.  Continue reading “Washington Receives National Fellowship to Become a U.S. Foreign Service Officer”

Waters Wins 2015 KSU Young Alumni Award

David E. Waters

David E. Waters, BA 1999, received the Kansas State University College of Arts and Sciences Young Alumni Award at the Eisenhower Circle Celebration at KSU on October 15, 2015.  After graduating from KSU, David attended the University of Kansas School of Law on scholarship and also clerked for Kansas State Supreme Court Justice Robert E. Davis.  He joined the law firm Lathrop & Gage LLP, in Kansas City and Johnson County, Kansas, following completion of his law degree and quickly made his mark on the greater Kansas City legal community.  Now a partner at Lathrop & Gage, he was named a Super Lawyer Missouri and Kansas “Rising Star” from 2012 to 2015 and one of The Best Lawyers in America in Real Estate for 2013-2016.  David has also published a number of articles for professional legal publications and regularly speaks on legal issues for various professional associations.  Continue reading “Waters Wins 2015 KSU Young Alumni Award”

Master of Public Administration Student Wins Prestigious Scholarship

Jared Wasinger, a student in our Master of Public Administration program, received one of two scholarships awarded annually by the Kansas Association of City/County Management. Jared is a Kansas native who received his undergraduate degree from K-State.
The Kansas Association of City/County Management (KACM) is an organization of local government management officials working together since 1951 to support and promote professional management and high ethical standards for effective democracy in local city and county governments in Kansas.

This is the second year in a row that one of our MPA students has won one of these prestigious awards.

Two Political Science Students Nominated for the Truman Scholarship

Ciara Chambers and Eleanor Dickens, both seniors in political science, were among four students nominated by Kansas State University for the 2015 Harry S. Truman Scholarship. The Truman Scholarship recognizes college students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in public service, government or the nonprofit sector. It provides up to $30,000 in financial support for graduate education. Chambers and Dickens competed with 600 nominees from across the nation for the 60 scholarships awarded.  While neither was ultimately awarded a Truman, their nominations underscore the fact that each has a bright future.  Continue reading “Two Political Science Students Nominated for the Truman Scholarship”

Student Awarded Scholarship and Study Abroad Opportunity in Kyrgyzstan

Joel Blankenship, senior in political science, history, and international studies, has been awarded a David L. Boren Scholarship. The Boren Scholarship, sponsored by the National Security Education Program, provides funds for undergraduate and graduate students to experience linguistic and cultural immersion in countries influential in maintaining U.S. national security.  Joel is the recipient of $19,300 in scholarship funds to support two semesters in Kyrgyzstan to study the Russian language. During his first semester, Joel will be fully immersed in the Russian language and Kyrgyz culture while living with a host family.  In his second semester, he plans to gain internship experience with a nongovernmental organization or the United Nations Development Agency. Upon graduation, Boren scholars such as Joel are guaranteed employment in a federal government agency focusing on national security.

Joel is an Army ROTC cadet, a member of the University Honors Program, member of the Silver Key Sophomore Honorary Society, and a delegate on the university’s Model U.N team.

The department held its annual scholarship reception on Friday April 10, 2015 in the Manhattan Room at the Manhattan Country Club. Family, guests, donors, and faculty members joined our scholarship winners and majors for an enjoyable afternoon. PhD Graduates Earn Accolades

The Department of Political Science administers a joint graduate program on Security Studies with KSU’s History Department.  Security Studies PhD students continue to find rewarding positions and have been recognized for many accomplishments:

Rabia Abktar, PhD 2015, is the founding Director of the Centre for Security, Strategy, and Policy Research at the University of Lahore, Pakistan.

Saad Alsubie (Col), PhD 2013, has helped to develop the curriculum and teaches at the Saudi Command and General Staff College, which offers MA degrees in strategic, security, and military studies.

Orlandrew Danzell, MA 2007, PhD 2012, assistant professor in the Tom Ridge School of Intelligence Studies at Mercyhurst University, was honored as Mercyhurst’s 2015-2016 Research Fellow.  The fellowship provides a course reduction and additional support that will allow Danzell to further advance his scholarship.  Orlandrew regularly teaches courses on Intelligence and National Security, Terrorism, and Research Methods at Mercyhurst.
