The growth of local foods and farmers markets has been evident across Kansas. To help small food producers prepare and sell foods safely, a publication entitled Foods Sold Directly to Consumers in Kansas: Regulations and Food Safety Best Practices is a comprehensive guide for anyone selling food products direct to consumers. This publication also includes information on selling eggs, poultry, live plants and much more!

This publication gets updated every January, and the 2024 edition is now available. This is a joint project between K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Lodging Division, and Kansas Department of Agriculture Meat & Poultry Inspection Program.

If you need assistance with the food products you would like to make and sell, the Kansas Value Added Foods Lab is a great resource for technical assistance and guidance.

Recipe Ideas for Farmers Market Produce

Do you go to your local farmers market and just drool over all the fresh produce? How will you prepare those brussels sprouts or kale?

The From the Land of Kansas (FLOK) website has recipe ideas to help you out. Some vendors may have these available for you to pick up as you shop. But they are also available on the FLOK website.

Local farmers markets are great ways to find new foods to try. Ask vendors what their favorite recipe to use an item new to you.

Learn more about the FLOK program and visit their booth in the Pride of Kansas building at the Kansas State Fair.

Farmers’ Market Regional Workshops

Farmers’ markets and direct-to-consumer opportunities are growing across Kansas and continue to be an important source of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and other value added agricultural products from small towns to large metropolitan areas. In 2020, 76 farmers’ markets were registered with the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.

To support Kansas’ farmer’s markets, six workshops are generally held throughout the state in February 2021. Due to COVID-19, the workshops will be held virtually this year. Register now!

Produce Traceability App

This new app was developed by Cal Jamerson, Produce Safety Extension Associate, K-State Research and Extension

To help small produce farmers track their produce operation from farm to buyer, a new Traceability App for Produce Growers is available.

The app allows the grower to map their fields, designate a code for each commodity grown, generate a harvest date and lot code, and create a product sticker to print out the information and adhere to the packaging. These lot codes can also be added to invoices for the buyers.

This tool will enhance the small produce growers ability to track their crops and in the case of a recall, that product can be easily tracked back to a specific field.
