April 2017 Update

Accounting Alumni and Friends,

I’m excited to share with you our quarterly K-State Accounting electronic newsletter. Our goal is to keep in touch with you in a meaningful and timely way. We are incredibly fortunate to have supportive and loyal alumni. As always, we invite you to partner with us in the exciting things we are doing at K-State Accounting.

Thanks for all your support and Go Cats!

Brett Wilkinson PhD

Department Head, K-State Accounting

CBA New Building

In August 2016, we relocated from Calvin Hall to our magnificent new business building. One of the most exciting things about the new building has been the change in student culture. The new building has a vast array of study areas, places for students to meet together, and areas for our alumni, corporate partners and recruiters to engage with students. As a result, the CBA is truly a destination building with a new vibrant and energetic culture. If you have not yet seen the new building, please come by and visit us next time you are in Manhattan.

International Programs

At K-State Accounting, we believe strongly in the value of international experience. In Summer 2016, we launched our first short term study abroad experience to China. Led by Dr. Amy Hageman, our group of fifteen graduate students had the chance to learn about Chinese business and culture. The group visited Beijing and Shanghai over a 10-day period.

In Summer 2017, we will take a group of 21 students on a study trip to Australia. This group will be working with students from James Cook University in Australia, on a joint case exploring transfer pricing and international business issues. This opportunity to work in a cross-national team will be a unique and valuable learning experience for our students. The group will also visit with firms in Sydney and Cairns to learn about Australian business. In addition, the group will take a snorkeling trip on the Great Barrier Reef, a cruise on Sydney Harbour and a tour of the Sydney Opera House.

Faculty News

We are delighted to have two new faculty members joining us in the coming year.

In Summer, Dr. Brooke Beyer will join us. Brooke is a K-State Accounting graduate and also holds a PhD from Oklahoma State. Brooke comes to us from Virginia Tech where he has been an Assistant Professor for the past four years. Brooke will be teaching in our financial accounting and accounting theory areas.

In Fall, Dr. Rebekah (Becky) Heath will join us as a Teaching Professor. Becky holds a PhD from the University of Nebraska and is currently employed at St. Ambrose University in Iowa. Becky will be teaching international accounting and financial accounting.

Two of our colleagues – Dr. Dan Deines and Dr. Richard Ott – are entering the phased retirement program. Under this program, they will each move to a reduced load in the coming year. Both Richard and Dan have made amazing contributions to K-State Accounting for many decades and although they will have reduced involvement in the department, we are delighted that they will remain engaged with us for a while yet.

GT – K-State Accounting Success Academy

In October 2016, we received funding support from Grant Thornton to launch the GT – K-State Accounting Success Academy. This new Accounting Coaching program employs Master of Accountancy students to provide tutoring assistance to undergraduate students. The program has been remarkably successful and this Fall we have expanded the Accounting Success Academy to cover additional undergraduate classes. We appreciate the support of GT in making this program a success for both our MAcc and undergraduate students.

Your Support

The exciting things we are accomplishing at K-State Accounting depend heavily on the support we receive from our amazing alumni base. Our Master of Accountancy program has more than doubled in the last three years and we continue to explore and add new and innovative programs. Many of our students encounter financial challenges and many of our alumni understand what it is like to navigate those challenges. Your support enables us to provide student scholarships and a wide range of programs in the department.

Will you please partner with us in the coming year by making a financial contribution to one of our funds?
