A note from the Dean’s Office

Kimathi_Choma 200x200Faculty Colleagues:

Wow, we are already 10 weeks into the semester. The semester is moving along quickly and things are gearing up for the great push to the end. This week students are starting to enroll in their spring courses. This is a very important retention step and I would like to thank you for all that you do to make that process successful and smooth for our students. This is also the last week that a student can drop a regular session course, which some students may find necessary for a variety of reasons.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Michael Tilford Conference on Diversity and Multiculturalism at Pittsburg State University. If you are unfamiliar with this conference, it provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and administrators at Kansas Regents’ institutions to discuss diversity in higher education. If you would like to attend in the future here is where you can find more information http://www.pittstate.edu/tilfordconference/. If you don’t want to wait until next year to have some discussion and interaction around the topic of diversity, please consider attending the 10th Diversity Summit/Institute for Student Learning Assessment on Thursday afternoon and Friday, November 12-13, 2015. This Summit will provide two days of programming aimed at improving our campus climate for diversity and inclusion, assessing student learning outcomes in diversity, and celebrating the rich cultural diversity of our community. The Summit/Institute is free to all K-Staters, with the exception of meals. More information can be found at http://newprairiepress.org/isla/conference/2015/ or by contacting the Office of Diversity, romaine@ksu.edu, 785-532-6276. I would also be glad to help.

Thank you for all you do to promote diversity and inclusion in our college the largest and most diverse college in the university from most vantage points.

Thank you for all you do for ArtSci and K-State!

Kimathi

A note from the Deans’ Office

dorhout_deanswelcomeFaculty Colleagues:

Well, two weeks into the semester, and we are off to the races. Campus is filled with students again, and there is excitement in the air about our many programs and activities in the College. I had the privilege and pleasure to welcome more than twenty new faculty colleagues to campus and celebrate the start of their new adventure with our faculty ice cream social. I remember starting my first faculty position in 1991 and the fear of a new town, new university, and new responsibilities hit me in about week 3 of the semester. Keep a watchful eye out for these new folks in your department or building and be sure to introduce yourself, share a coffee, or offer to serve as a mentor. Please help them feel welcome to the Wildcat family.

As you keep an eye on your new colleagues, please also look out for our students. Many new first year and transfer students are not only new to K-State, but new to a university perspective – roughly 40% of our student body are the first members of their families to go to college. This place can be very overwhelming for an 18-year old. If you notice students in your classes who are struggling, please direct them to our many student resources here: http://artsci.k-state.edu/student-resources or within the broader university community: http://www.k-state.edu/onestop.

Thank you for all you do for K-State!
Peter
