History Lecture: “A Strange Freedom: Global Citizenship and Anti-Nationalism in the American Century”

Sheyda Jahanbani, associate professor of history at the University of Kansas, will discuss former Broadway actor and World War II veteran Garry Davis, who renounced his U.S. citizenship in 1948, and a new project that uses Davis’s experience to explore the history of anti-nationalist politics in the aftermath of World War II.

K-State’s annual carnival, which attracts thousands of attendees, features academic exhibits, entertainment, food and fun activities! The College of Arts and Sciences will host an academic expo in the Union Courtyard and our departments will host additional activities around campus, including glassblowing, fine arts exhibitions, a critter fair, a physics demo that might cause sparks to fly, a broadcast studio tour, and more!

Meet the Author: Dr. Cameron McCoy

Dr. Cameron McCoy, U.S. Cyber Command, will give a lecture on his book, Contested Valor: African American Marines in the Age of Power, Protest, and Tokenism, as part of the history department’s Meet the Author Series. McCoy earned his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, served in the Marine Corps, and has taught at West Point, Brigham Young University, Idaho State University, and the U.S. Air Force Academy.

 

Graduate Applied Language Teaching Symposium

Are you interested in second language learning or teaching (or education in general)? Get personal insights and industry updates on applied language teaching at this free symposium.

Graduate students and teaching professionals from a variety of language backgrounds will give presentations, and Dr. Sara Kearns from K-State Libraries will present, “Libraries and Teachers: Partners in Learning.” The keynote speech, “Applied Learning Beyond the Language Course: Student Engagement with Latine and Mayan Communities for Health Equity,” will be delivered by Dr. Rachel Showstack, of Wichita State University.

 

Kansas Science Festival

K-State scientists and other science enthusiasts will offer fun, interactive science activities for all ages in Downtown Manhattan! Meet researchers and discover how we all use science every day. Topics range from Mars rovers and mighty microbes to the science behind historical events in Kansas.

Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Commencement

Bramlage Coliseum

Congrats to all our graduating students! The Spring 2025 College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate commencement ceremony will be at 8:30 a.m. Sat., May 17, at Bramlage Coliseum. Graduate Student Commencement is at 1 p.m. Fri., May 16, at Bramlage Coliseum.

Undergraduate commencement participants, please:

  • Wear purple regalia.
  • Arrive by 7:30 a.m. to line up with your department.
  • Park in the west lot.
  • Remember to bring your printed Grad Pass!
  • Place tassels on the right and pin honor cords on the left shoulder.
  • Do not bring personal items that you can’t wear under your gown, including purses, cameras, etc.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; you’ll be standing a long time and using stairs.

Apply for a $1,000 Arts and Sciences undergraduate research award!

purple dollar signSet yourself apart with a mentored research experience! Undergraduate students enrolled full-time in any College of Arts and Sciences major are invited to apply for $1,000 research awards to conduct projects with faculty mentors. The deadline for fall is May 1.

 

Re-enroll by April 16 for your chance to win $500!

purple dollar signEnroll in fall courses by 11:59 p.m. April 16 to be entered into a drawing for one of four $500 scholarships for fall 2025 tuition! Undergraduate degree-seeking students who are in good academic standing and enrolled in at least 12 fall-semester credit hours are eligible. Names will be drawn on April 18. Winners will be notified via their K-State email.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Conservation biology student’s field mouse research gives clues about Kansas ecosystem changes and how they could impact human health

After attending community college for a while, Sam Speck transferred to K-State and enrolled in the conservation biology program. That first semester, he took a mammalogy course with Dr. Andrew Hope and was enthralled by all the research opportunities Hope mentioned.

Since then, Speck has worked for the Kansas State Biorepository and gotten involved in several research projects at the Konza Prairie.

Speck recently received an undergraduate honorarium from the American Society of Mammalogists.
