Beef Improvement Federation Symposium

The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) hosted its 56th Annual Research Symposium and Convention last week in Knoxville, Tennessee. The event was marked by several significant achievements and honors by #KSUASI students, faculty and alumni. For more photos visit the KSU ASI Flickr account.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Beef Improvement Federation Roy Wallace Scholarship. This prestigious award was given to recent K-State Animal Sciences and Industry (ASI) graduate Audrey Tarochione, from London Mills, Illinois. She received the scholarship from Brian House of Select Sires Inc. during the awards ceremony on June 10.

The conference also featured the first-ever Beef Improvement Federation Shark Tank competition, which took place on June 11. The winners of this innovative contest Pictured (left to right) were Megan Rolf, BIF central region secretary; Randie Culbertson, shark; Drew Lakamp, first place; Dani Stock, second place; Will Shaffer, third place; Shane Bedwell, shark; and Donnell Brown, shark.were announced, showcasing the talents of graduate students in the field. Kansas State University had strong representation in the competition. Graduate students Dani Stock and Will Shaffer secured second and third place, winning $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. Additionally, graduate student Matthew Kinghorn was a finalist, demonstrating the high caliber of K-State’s program and its students.

KSU ASI graduate student Elizabeth Dressler placed second in the USDS Travel Award Poster Competition.

ASI Alumnus, Kevin Schultz from Haviland, Kansas, the past president of the BIF, was recognized for this dedication as 2023-24 BIF President.

The event was a significant success, highlighting the achievements of individuals and fostering advancements in beef improvement. We look forward to next year’s symposium and the continued progress in the field.
