K-State College of Agriculture’s Diversity Program Grill Out

Each summer, the K-State College of Agriculture’s Diversity Programs Office hosts the Kansas State Research & Extension (KSRE) Summer Research Fellows program. This program provides 8-week research fellowships designed for undergraduate students from land-grant colleges and universities. The program seeks to prepare students, including those from underrepresented groups, for the dynamic and demanding work of graduate school in agriculture-related fields of study. As typical, the Department of Animal Sciences & Industry (ASI) and the Food Science program hosted multiple students for this research experience this year.

To celebrate a wonderful experience, Drs. Drouillard, Grieger and Phebus (with greatly appreciated help from Yvonne Grieger and Yara Abi Nakhoul, food safety Fullbright scholar) provided a cookout at Tuttle Creek State Park for the program participants this weekend. Dr. Drouillard smoked pork ribs and chicken on the grill, along with sides and an abundance of Call Hall ice cream. Approximately 35 people participated, including Dr. Zelia Wiley (Assistant Dean and Director), Summer Santillana (Office Director), and April Mason-Taylor (graduate research assistant) Everyone went home full and happy, with doggie bags of BBQ!

  • Bridge the Gap: Chris Mullinix, Angie Denton and Emily Grund represented the K-State College of Agriculture and #KSUASI at Bridging the Gap hosted during the Junior National Hereford Expo in Grand Island, Nebraska. It was a great networking event providing the opportunity to interact with several out-of-state prospective students.
  • Staff Spotlight Award: Kristine Frey, K-State ASI Research Assistant, was a recipient of the May Staff Spotlight Award, for her dedication and leadership to the K-State Dairy Teaching and Research Unit. Frey’s nomination noted, “Kris has been providing leadership for the K-State Dairy Teaching and Research Center. Her more than 15 years of experience at the dairy have enabled her to step into this leadership role and ensured continued operation of the facility. As a result of Kris’ dedication, the facility has continued to operate at nearly the same number of animals as it has historically and ensured that research and teaching activities are able to continue at a high level. Without strong leadership at the dairy like what we have with Kris, the ability to teach students and conduct research related to the state’s fastest growing agricultural industry would be greatly reduced.” Read more here.
