Eleven Kansas State University Department of Animal Sciences and Industry (ASI) seniors were recognized Thursday, May 2 for their service as K-State ASI Mentors.

The students were honored during the ASI Mentor Annual Banquet at the Stanley Stout Center. The graduating seniors were acknowledged for their dedication to creating a welcoming environment for prospective students and their families, as well as during events hosted by the department.

Throughout the 2023-24 school year ASI Mentors shared their experiences during approximately 235 prospective student visits, at 12 youth and stakeholder events and have written more than 2,300 congratulation cards.

“This past week we were able to celebrate an outstanding set of seniors within the ASI mentor program. These young adults have dedicated a lot of their time and energy into the current and future of our department. We appreciate everything they have done to support and grow this program,” says Emily Grund, ASI Mentor advisor. “Likewise, we are excited to welcome in a new group of mentors. I am anxious to see the lasting impression they will leave during this exciting time in history for the ASI department.”

Wildcat Showdown

The 2024 Wildcat Showdown took place on Saturday, April 27 at CiCo Park. It was another great event with over 100 exhibitors from five different states. This event was hosted by the K-State Sheep & Meat Goat Unit.

Undergraduate Research Forum

K-State ASI Students Participate in Undergraduate Research Symposium

A total of 30 undergraduate students presented research posters during the Kansas State University Animal Sciences and Industry Undergraduate Research Symposium on Friday, May 3. The symposium, hosted at the Leadership Studies Townhall, highlighted ASI undergraduate research for the spring 2024 semester.

The Dr. Mark and Kim Young Undergraduate Research Fund in Animal Sciences and Industry sponsored this year’s symposium and the Undergraduate Research Awards distributed during the event.

Winners of the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry Undergraduate Research Symposium pictured with Dr. Mark Young, scholarship sponsor, are Chanae Parker, Manhattan, Kansas; Meghan Garren, Pennvalley, California; Audrey Tarochione, London Mills, Illinois; and Chesney Effling, Highmore, South Dakota.

Four students were awarded $1,000 scholarships based on a combination of their scientific abstract, poster and presentation of data. Winning the scholarships were: Chesney Effling, Highmore, South Dakota; Meghan Garren, Pennvalley, California; Chanae Parker, Manhattan, Kansas; and Audrey Tarochione, London Mills, Illinois.

Kiracofe Lecture

The 2024 Kiracofe Lecture was hosted on Tuesday, April 30 in Call Hall 205. Dr. Jeff Stevenson presented, “Perils and Performance of Peer Review.” If you missed the lecture you can watch the recording here.
During the lecture, Dr. Stevenson discussed usage suggestion. His tips and tricks sheet can be viewed Editorial Tips.
In addition to his Kiracofe Lecture, he presented during the Physiology and Animal Breeding seminar, “Physiology and Technologies Developed for Reproductive Management.”
