Departmental News – October 24, 2023

ASI DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI: Dr. Bob Smith, ’68 and DVM, will be recognized as the ASI Distinguished Alumni on Monday, November 13. The faculty meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Heritage Room and the departmental seminar will be at 12:30 p.m. in Call Hall 205. A short reception will follow in the Heritage Room.

KIHO LEE’S SEMINAR: Kiho Lee, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of Missouri, will provide a seminar presentation titled “Genome editing in livestock – current progress and possibilities.” The schedule for the presentation is outlined below.

HONEY TASTERS WANTED:

  • WHERE & WHEN: Agronomy Education Center on Sunday, October 29.
  • 4 sessions with 25 honey tasters per session.
  • Sessions start at 10am with the last session starting at 2:30pm.

This event is in collaboration with Dr. Laura Stan, Laboratory Head for Sensory Analysis of Foods, Faculty of Food Science and Technology at University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Dr. Stan is a visiting Fulbright scholar to the K-State Olathe Campus performing work in the Sensory and Consumer Research Centre this semester. We are helping her collect data to evaluate sensory reaction to honey!

If you are interested:

  • Honey testers must be within ages 18-70 years old with no diabetes or allergy to honey.
  • Participants should refrain from smoking, eating and drinking except water for 1 hour before the evaluation.
  • Abstain from using toothpaste or flavored mouthwashes, perfumed toiletries, or anything else that may introduce odors to the sensory room.

All these things might affect the perception of smell and taste not only of your own but also of your neighbors.

INTERNATIONAL BOVINE LEUKOSIS VIRUS CONFERENCE: The International Bovine Leukosis Virus conference will be hosted at Michigan State University on November 8-10. The conference will include speakers from Japan, Canada, Poland, and the US. This conference is a joint effort between Michigan State University and Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. The target audience for this conference are researchers in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, DVMs, and dairy and beef producers. K-State ASI Family & Friends Reunion

The 9th Annual K-State ASI Family & Friends Reunion was hosted Saturday, October 7, at the Stanley Stout Center with more than 1,000 ASI family and friends in attendance. Highlights of the evening included awarding the 2023 Don L. Good Impact Award to Dr. Larry Corah (https://youtu.be/XDyHglOhNjc), as well as a performance by the K-State marching band and the attendance of Willie the Wildcat.

KSU DAIRY CATTLE JUDGING TEAM RESULTS:

The K-State Dairy Cattle Judging Team competed in the National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Exposition on October 1 in Madison, WI. Team members pictured (left to right): Alicia Bohren (Longmont, CO), Sarah Jordan (Rutland, MA), Charlie Bestwick (Sabetha, KS), Samantha Schwindt (Hillsboro, KS), Ellie Vincent (Boyce, VA) and coach Kelsey Pasch. The team is also coached by Billy Brown and Rachel Skinner. Highlights of the day are below.

HOSA FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE PRESENTATION: HOSA – Future Health Professionals Fall Leadership Conference was hosted on campus Wednesday, October 4. More than 600 youth attended the conference.

 

 

Dr. Karol Fike and Dr. Abbey Nutsch hosted two breakout session for students to explore animal sciences & industry and food science & industry as a pathway to pre-health.

 

 

 

K-STATE NAMES 35 FRESHMEN TO QUEST HONORARY: Thirty-five first-year students have been chosen as members of the Quest Freshman Honorary. Quest works to develop freshmen leaders through mentorship, personal development, and campus involvement. Those who are selected are paired with mentors from the Blue Key Senior Honorary. College of Agriculture Graduate Student Awards

COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AWARDS GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS:

The College of Agriculture has awarded $75,375 in graduate student scholarships.

Five scholarships have been funded specifically for graduate students who are enrolled in programs in or connected to the college. The support of graduate students is an area of emphasis and has a significant impact on the research and teaching of agriculture. Congratulations to the students in animal science and food science who received scholarships.

Stocker Field Day

STOCKER FIELD DAY: The 24th Annual KSU Beef Stocker Field Day took place on September 28, 2023. With an attendance of more than 230 people, a variety of topics were covered including Beef cattle outlook, latest research into top pharmaceutical technologies yielding the highest economic return in stocker cattle and fine-tuning bunk calls. A producer panel discussed the recruiting and retention of labor. A delicious BBQ lunch was served. The day concluded with the annual prairie oyster feed and Call Hall ice cream.
