A team from Kansas State University’s College of Engineering is among the 10 teams selected nationally to compete in the inaugural National Collegiate Wind Competition. The team’s goal is to build a small wind turbine that can charge an electronic device such as a cellphone or an iPad.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado is the competition organizer, under direction of the U.S. Department of Energy.
The National Collegiate Wind Competition is a forum for undergraduate college students of multiple disciplines to investigate innovative wind energy concepts; gain experience designing, building and testing a wind turbine to perform according to a customized market data-derived business plan; and increase their knowledge of wind industry barriers. Multimedia: The Digital Revolution
Multimedia computing has produced a digital revolution that has changed the way we access and learn information in everyday life. It has changed the way we study, learn, communicate, play, shop, research and entertain. Many applications such as video conferencing, distance learning, entertainment, telemedicine, e-commerce and digital libraries would not have been possible without the development of highly efficient data compression techniques. One major drawback of this digital revolution is the ease with which digital content can be reproduced without loss of information. This has created another challenge, the digital rights management, or DRM, which will play an important role in the protection of the ownership of digital content by restricting the actions a recipient may take in regard to that content. The Electrical Power Affiliates Program, or EPAP, is a partnership between Kansas State University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and seven industry organizations: Burns & McDonnell, Kansas City Power & Light Co., Omaha Public Power District, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Sega Inc. and Westar Energy. The program gives engineering students the opportunity to research, learn, network and engage in professional development.
