Multimedia: The Digital Revolution

Multimedia computing has produced a digital revolution that has changed the way we access and learn information in everyday life. It has changed the way we study, learn, communicate, play, shop, research and entertain.  Many applications such as video conferencing, distance learning, entertainment, telemedicine, e-commerce and digital libraries would not have been possible without the development of highly efficient data compression techniques. One major drawback of this digital revolution is the ease with which digital content can be reproduced without loss of information. This has created another challenge, the digital rights management, or DRM, which will play an important role in the protection of the ownership of digital content by restricting the actions a recipient may take in regard to that content.

Dr. Satish Chandra has developed a senior level course in multimedia compression that deals with the various aspects of multimedia compression, streaming and international standards development. Multimedia compression employs tools and techniques that reduce the file size of various media formats such as text, graphics, speech, audio, image and video.  It is a great challenge to achieve high data compression while maintaining the quality and fidelity of the digital media. In this course, the students are exposed to various data compression schemes used in developing international standards such as JPEG and MPEG. Students are also asked to write programs to test these compression techniques. At the end of the course they also compare the performance of all the compression methods including the standards learned in the class using an educational compression software package.

Multimedia compression standards have provided us with a broad range of applications, including Blu-ray disc, MP3 songs, digital cinema, video on demand and DVD. New generation multimedia compression methods are capable of providing smooth service even in unreliable network infrastructure. Emerging High Efficiency Video Coding, or HEVC video compression standard, a successor to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, or Advanced Video Coding, currently under joint development by the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group, or MPEG and ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group HEVC/H265 is targeted at next-generation HDTV displays and content capture systems which feature progressively scanned video frames at display resolutions up to 4320p, or 8192×4320. The future of multimedia is MAGIC: Mobile multimedia, Anytime, anywhere and by anyone, Global mobility, Integrated wireless solution, and Customized personal service. MAGIC is a service incorporated into 4G wireless technology.
