Celebrating Our Students through the LA of the Month Award

Brent Weaver

One of our values as a program is to always put students’ needs first. In a mostly virtual and especially challenging semester, we realized that we had an opportunity to further support our students by highlighting their achievements and celebrating their successes. Thus, we created the LA of the Month Award. This award recognizes at least one Learning Assistant each month who goes above and beyond to support their students. Faculty, students, and fellow Learning Assistants were all able to submit nominations. This semester, we recognized 5 Learning Assistants.

  • Hope Bryan, Residential Learning Assistant for the Muggle Studies CAT Community
  • Lindsey Edwards, Residential Learning Assistant for the Pop Culture and Society CAT Community
  • Brexten Bland, Learning Assistant for the Menard Family Scholars CAT Community
  • Glenn Kinley, Learning Assistant for the Speak Your Mind CAT Community
  • Emma Brunner, Learning Assistant for the Pre-PT CAT Community

We are so proud of our award winners, as well as the entire Learning Assistant cohort. Research in higher education reminds us of the importance of belonging and impact – of being seen and knowing your work has purpose. Knowing you are valued is, perhaps, one of the most important aspects of stepping into a role, and we value our Learning Assistants a great deal.

To our 47 Learning Assistants: Thank you. Thank you for all you have done to go above and beyond to support your students this semester. The K-State First team is so grateful for your kindness, empathy, and consistent ability to put students first. Your work is integral to the success, engagement, and retention of first-year students, and without you, our K-State First program would not have the successful positive impact it does each year. Remember that your work with students matters. And above all else, know that you matter to us.

Thank you for your support of K-State First through our first decade and into the next! If you would like to donate to our program and support student scholarships and student success initiatives, you can do so here
