Roger N. Planalp Award best poster session of the AAPG Mid-Continent Section

Dr. Abdelmoneam Raef and his graduate student Luke Rijfkogel have been awarded Roger N. Planalp Award for the best poster session of the AAPG Mid-Continent Section Meeting, Wichita, 2019.

Their research poster presentation was on integrating 3D reflection seismic data attributes, well-logs, and machine learning modeling for predicting lithofacies of the Mississippian reservoir of the Wellington Field, Sumner County, KS. The topic is one of the research themes of Dr. Raef’s research program at K-state Geology to benefit hydrocarbon reservoir characterization for enhanced oil recovery and/or CO2 geological sequestration endeavors. Several peer-reviewed journal publications and continued graduate students’ interests in this area of research, at K-state Geology, reflect the potential of the growing machine learning applications in applied geology and geophysics.
