Distance Student Conducts Research in Financial Planning Field

Sarah Asebedo, Edina, Minn., a doctoral student in personal financial planning

Where there’s money, there are often
disagreements.

Sarah Asebedo, Edina, Minn., a student
in Kansas State University’s online personal
financial planning Ph.D. program, wanted
to examine the role of conflict resolution
techniques in the financial planning field.

As a financial planner with Accredited
Investors, Inc. for nearly a decade, Asebedo
advises clients through all aspects of their
financial life, including career changes and
retirement transitions. Major life transitions
and money decisions typically cause
disagreements between couples to surface
throughout the financial planning process.
Asebedo has found that she can utilize conflict resolution techniques as a third party to help couples see eye to eye and move forward.

Program Spotlight: Conflict Resolution

Debra Roby (left), Orlando, Fla., conflict resolution student

Few individuals purposely place themselves in conflict, but having the skills to resolve disputes and negotiations can come in handy in nearly every profession.

K-State’s online program in conflict resolution is offered as both a graduate or undergraduate certificate. For Debra Roby, a court-appointed mediator from Orlando, Fla., the graduate certificate was just what she needed to transition into mediation from her background in commercial insurance.

Helping Those Who Serve: New Scholarship Assists Military Distance Students

Allan Sicat ’03, Alumni Fellow and scholarship donor.

When Allan Sicat ‘03, former U.S. Army officer, earned his degree online, he had no idea what impact he’d make on his alma mater a decade later.

To transition from military to civilian life and prepare for the corporate world, Allan completed an online master’s degree in engineering management. Because of his professional accomplishments and distinguished career service in the years following graduation, Allan was selected as the Division of Continuing Education’s first Alumni Fellow in 2011.

The honor of serving in this new role for the division, coupled with his affinity for the university, gave Allan a strong desire to give back to K-State. So he did something else that had never been done before—he started a scholarship fund specifically for distance students involved in the military.
