Graduate students make valuable contributions to teaching, research, scholarship, and creative discovery at Kansas State University. Many also engage in leadership and service roles to enhance the graduate student experience or to contribute to other university operations and goals. The following highlights recent awards and honors that recognize these important contributions made by K-State graduate students in the spring 2021 semester.

Nathan Hein, PhD student in agronomy – Recipient of 2021 North American Plant Phenotyping Network Graduate Student Awards which Hein received for his extraordinarily high productivity in research, publications, and outreach efforts. He was also the recipient of the 2021 American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, Soil society of America Future Leaders in Science Award.
Chandrima Shyam, PhD student in agronomy – Won second place in the doctoral poster contest at the Weed Science Society of America meeting.
Zach Duncan, Masters student in Animal Science – Recognized as a 2021 recipient of the Larry Corah Graduate Student Outstanding Masters Student Award, The award winners are selected based on scholastic achievement, research activity and success, teaching activities, faculty evaluation and overall contributions to the mission of the department.
Musah Muntari, Masters student in animal science – Was selected to receive the International Student and Scholar Services’ ISC scholarship.
Patricia Ochonski, PhD student in animal science – Recognized as a 2021 recipient of the Larry Corah Graduate Student Outstanding PhD Student Award. The award winners are selected based on scholastic achievement, research activity and success, teaching activities, faculty evaluation and overall contributions to the mission of the department.
Zhong-Xing Rao, PhD student in animal science- Was selected to receive the International Student and Scholar Services’ M&H Taiwan scholarship.
Cameron Osborne, PhD student in entomology – Selected as K-State’s runner-up for the Capitol Graduate Research Summit and recipient of $300 scholarship for his poster, “Identifying Enzymes Limiting an Effective RNA Response in the Biting Midge Culicoides Sonorensis.“
Don Wesley Dyer, PhD student in horticulture and natural resources – Received the $5,000 Watson fellowship from the Gold Course Superintendents Association of America, which is awarded to students in postgraduate degree programs who have been identified as scientists that will go on to be leaders in turfgrass management.
Rick Wyatt, Masters student in horticulture and natural resources- Recipient of the Johnson County Education Research Triangle scholarship which is a $4,000 scholarship designed to last for the duration of the program of study.
Yeqi Zhao, Masters student in horticulture and natural resources – Recipient of the Johnson County Education Research Triangle scholarship which is a $4,000 scholarship designed to last for the duration of the program of study.
Upasana Dhakal, PhD student in plant pathology – Received 2nd place in the K-State Graduate Research Arts, and Discovery Forum poster session. Upsana also received and International Student and Scholar Services’ ISC scholarship.
Nar Ranabhat, PhD student in plant pathology – Selected to join the BioKansas Industry Immersion Program which is designed to broaden graduate students’ understanding of area career options, expand their professional networks, and prepare them for career advancements. He also received 1st place in the Agricultural Sciences category in the K-State Graduate Research, Arts, and Discovery Forum.
COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING, AND DESIGN
Talisa Hernandez, Masters student in architecture – Awarded the inaugural Condia + Ornelas Traveling Fellowship. Hernandez plans to use the fellowship to travel through Italy to document the variation in aesthetic and sensory experience of a range of Italian cities across the peninsula and to interpret and represent those observations through the medium of a digitized architectural capriccio.
Jaeyoung Ha, PhD student in environmental design and planning – Recipient of the Graduate School’s Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Grant that provides research support to doctoral students in these disciplines in their final year of study. Also selected to receive the International Student and Scholar Services’ Do Sup Chung scholarship.
Emily Block, Masters student in interior architecture and industrial design – Was selected to present at the national Environmental Design Research Association conference. Block’s research is looking into the possible ways to redesign dying malls in order to address the ongoing housing crisis, revive remaining businesses, and reinvigorate communities.
Lauren Fitzpatrick, Masters student in interior architecture and industrial design – Was selected to present at the national Environmental Design Research Association conference. Fitzpatrick’s research is working to develop a set of designs focusing on improving patient and staff experience as well as ensuring equine welfare by controlling environmental stressors in equine-facilitated psychotherapy facilities.
Robyn Fritze, Masters student in interior architecture and industrial design – Chosen to represent K-State and present research at the national Interior Design Educators Council annual conference.
Jacquelynn Ruwwe, Masters student in interior architecture and industrial design – Chosen to represent K-State and present research at the national Interior Design Educators Council annual conference.
Meredith Bryan, Masters student in landscape architecture – Earned an Award of Merit from Prairie Gateway Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects.

Elizabeth Renner, PhD student in biology – Received the Robert J. Robel Graduate Student Award in Wildlife Biology and Ecology.
Bibek Subedi, PhD student in biology – Was selected to receive the International Student and Scholar Services’ ISC scholarship. Ellen Welti, PhD student in biology – Had a paper selected as a finalist for the 2020 Cozzarelli Prize. The annual Cozzarelli Prize recognizes research papers that reflect scientific excellence and originality.
Elizabeth Wilson, PhD student in biology – Received the Michael Scott Watkins Teaching Award.

Arnaldo Torres-Hernandez, PhD student in chemistry – Earned honorable mention honors from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Xinyu Zong, Masters student in English – Selected as one of the recipients of the Alumni Association’s 2021 International Leadership Award. The International Leadership Awards are given annually to four outstanding graduating students for service and leadership within the international K-State and Manhattan communities.

Hilda Onuoha, PhD student in geography – Recipient of a 2021 American Geographical Society Council Fellowship. Onuoha’s award will fund part of her doctoral research titled, “A Spatio-temporal Valuation of Grassland Ecosystem Services in the U.S. Great Plains.”

Sarah Lamm, Masters student in Geology – Earned an internship with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She is conducting data analysis of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, or LIBS, and Raman laser data collection experiments on hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor.
Toni Bettasso, Masters student in history – Was selected as a recipient of the Shirley A. Martin Scholarship to aid in the process of performing dissertation research, travel to libraries, museums and archives, attend professional events and conferences, and for tuition/book fees.

Doyeong Kim, PhD student in physics – Named a 2021 LPC Graduate Scholar, which supports students to further their dissertation research while working at Fermilab for a year under the supervision of a senior mentor resident. It includes a $30,000 stipend.

The fellowship is awarded to second-year students in the industrial/organizational doctoral program who are doing well in assistantships, demonstrating productive research activity, and are making strong progress toward their degree.
Tiffany Lawless, PhD student in psychology – Recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Instructor Award. Lawless received a monetary award thanks to the Nobuko S. Nicholson Opportunity Fund for Psychological Sciences.

Linda Wilson, Masters student in psychology – Selected as the 2021 K-State Global Campus Extraordinary Student. The Extraordinary Student award recognizes an online education student who has overcome an obstacle in the path of their education and who demonstrates academic excellence, focus and career ambition in their studies at K-State.
Sabrina DeSantis, Masters student in public administration – Recipient of the Department of Political Science’s John W. and Lynn L. Carlin Public Administration Scholarship. DeSantis also was awarded one of three scholarships conferred by the Kansas Association of City/County Management.

Dawson Bailey, student in architectural engineering – The team he was involved with took second place in four categories at the Architectural Engineering Institute 2021 Virtual Conference.
Gabriella Radina, Masters student in architectural engineering – Recipient of the 2021-2022 Besal Fund Scholarship. Nationally, the Besal Fund is awarded to a total of 19 undergraduate and graduate scholarships for the upcoming school year to students with an interest in lighting design and the lighting industry in general.
Jessica de Oliveira Demarco, PhD student in biological and agricultural engineering – Was selected to receive the International Student and Scholar Services’ William L. Richter scholarship.
Priyasha Fernando, Masters student in civil engineering – Was selected to receive the International Student and Scholar Services’ ISC scholarship.
Arash Saeidi Rashk Olia, PhD student in civil engineering – Co-authored a paper that was published in International Journal of Geomechanics is now the most read paper for March 2021.
Cristiane Kauer Brazil, PhD student in industrial engineering – Received 1st place in the Physical Sciences category of the K-State Graduate Research, Arts, and Discovery Forum
Guang Yang, PhD student in industrial engineering – Was selected to receive the International Student and Scholar Services’ ISC scholarship.
Tyler Albright, PhD student in mechanical engineering – Co-authored an article over “High-fidelity stochastic modeling of carbon black-based conductive polymer composites for strain and fatigue sensing” that was selected as an editor’s pick in Springer’s Journal of Materials Science.
Shakir Bin Mujib, PhD student in mechanical engineering – Awarded 2nd place in the Graduate Student poster competition of the Engineering Ceramics Division of the American Ceramic society’s 44th International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites.
