After a full year of postponing commencement ceremonies to protect the health and safety of our K-State community, the Graduate School was pleased to celebrate all 2020 and spring 2021 master’s and doctoral graduates on May 14. The ceremony was special not only because some graduates had waited a year for this occasion, but they also had the unique opportunity to experience commencement on the football field at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Throughout the past year, despite the ever-changing environment and concerns regarding the pandemic, the Graduate Student Council (GSC) continued to fulfill its mission to support and enhance the graduate student experience. The Graduate Student Council, with a leadership team of more than 30 graduate students representing 15 programs, adapted largely virtual operations and navigated the new safety guidelines to provide workshops, research forums, and networking opportunities for the graduate student body.

Graduate students make valuable contributions to teaching, research, scholarship, and creative discovery at Kansas State University. Many also engage in leadership and service roles to enhance the graduate student experience or to contribute to other university operations and goals. The following highlights recent awards and honors that recognize these important contributions made by K-State graduate students in the spring 2021 semester.
Anil Pant, doctoral candidate in biology from Nepal, was awarded the $17,600 Alvin and RosaLee Sarachek Predoctoral Honors Fellowship in Molecular Biology.
Alvin and RosaLee Sarachek, established the fellowship to recognize a doctoral student at Kansas State University who has demonstrated exceptional research and scholastic accomplishments. An interdisciplinary faculty selection committee determines the fellowship recipient.

K-State graduate faculty teach graduate courses, advise graduate students, serve on graduate student supervisory committees, and serve on the Graduate Council. They also demonstrate independence in scholarship, research, or creative work. Our graduate faculty have been busy this year, making important contributions to K-State and in their field of study. Read on to learn about graduate faculty awards, honors, and accomplishments from this past semester.
Internationally recognized researchers in integrated pest management and biofuels were selected as the 2020-2021 Commerce Bank and W.T. Kemper Foundation Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award recipients.
This year’s winners are Tom Phillips, professor of entomology, and Donghai Wang, professor of biological and agricultural engineering.
