In a few days we will celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July. With barbeques, parades, and firework shows we celebrate and take pride in our country. This patriotic celebration brings to mind a 4-H project that teaches youth about countries, cultures, communities and themselves: the 4-H citizenship project.
The 4-H citizenship project starts by teaching members about what good citizenship is, and advances into learning how to be a good neighbor and studying other cultures through exchanges. Older program members learn about township, city, and county governments.
Every summer, high school students from across the country travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), 4 H’s premier leadership and citizenship program for high school students. CWF is more than a Washington, D.C. field trip – it’s an opportunity for 4 H’ers to learn how to be citizen leaders and make a difference in their communities. CWF participants enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at our nation’s capital and the chance to meet members of Congress.
4 H is an innovator in developing youth leadership and decision-making skills to prepare young people for the future. 4-H citizenship programs engage youth in programs, organizations, and communities where they share a voice, influence, and decision-making authority. 4 H citizenship programs equip young people with confidence and leadership skills to be leaders today and tomorrow.
