4-H Geology Field Trip

Last year in early June, I met Sara Murphy. She stopped by my office to introduce herself; she is our 4-H Geology Volunteer Leader. I had never participated in a geology project, so she invited me on field trip to learn what this project was all about.

I followed a caravan of at least 15 vehicles down rural Continue reading “4-H Geology Field Trip”

Controlling glyphosate-resistant marestail in soybeans has been a big challenge for Kansas no-till producers in recent years. Because soybeans are generally planted later in the season, and marestail generally germinates in the fall or early spring, application timing and weed size are critical factors to successful control. Checklist of Good Gardening Practices

Mulching Tomatoes at the Giving Garden

Memorial Day Swine Show

On Memorial Day this weekend, Harvey County 4-H will host the second annual Spring Swine Show. At this show and many other 4-H livestock shows, participants will not only exhibit an animal that they have worked hard to take care of, but also work to build important life skills.

This weekend we expect more than 120 pigs to be exhibited; all done by 4-H youth age 7-18. Spring livestock shows in particular help youth to gauge their own skill level while learning from their peers as they work with their animals this summer. These youths will continue working to care for their animals and the land that they raise them on. This practice helps to develop more accountable and engaged youths as they take on agricultural responsibilities. Continue reading “Memorial Day Swine Show”
