4-H Geology Field Trip

Last year in early June, I met Sara Murphy. She stopped by my office to introduce herself; she is our 4-H Geology Volunteer Leader. I had never participated in a geology project, so she invited me on field trip to learn what this project was all about.

Memorial Day Swine Show

On Memorial Day this weekend, Harvey County 4-H will host the second annual Spring Swine Show. At this show and many other 4-H livestock shows, participants will not only exhibit an animal that they have worked hard to take care of, but also work to build important life skills.

This weekend we expect more than 120 pigs to be exhibited; all done by 4-H youth age 7-18. Spring livestock shows in particular help youth to gauge their own skill level while learning from their peers as they work with their animals this summer. These youths will continue working to care for their animals and the land that they raise them on. This practice helps to develop more accountable and engaged youths as they take on agricultural responsibilities. Continue reading “Memorial Day Swine Show”

If I could pick one day of work to describe what a “day in the life of a 4-H agent” is really like, I would pick last Friday. Continue reading “A Day in the Life of a 4-H Agent”

This summer, the Kansas State Fair is encouraging Kansas youth to learn more about agriculture by participating in their Summer Reading Challenge.

Youth participants will need to read eight books over the summer and log them on the provided reading journal. Books read aloud by an adult can also be counted. Continue reading “Kansas State Fair Summer Reading Challenge”
