Little Green Thumbs

Last year my niece and nephew helped me plant a flower bed in my backyard. They were excited to help dig up holes and carefully tuck flowers into the bed. They happily helped with watering every time they came over. The pride that they had in “their” flowers that they planted was priceless. Seven of my ten nieces and nephews live nearby, which means that this year, I’m planning an even bigger flower bed!

Gardening with kids is a great family bonding experience that can Continue reading “Little Green Thumbs”

Clovers or Shamrocks

St. Patrick’s day is coming up, which means that stores are full of green shamrock decorations, or as I see them- green clovers. I enjoy looking at all of these seasonal decorations; sparkly clovers, banners and even clover-shaped glasses. For me, this clover has a different meaning than the celebration of St. Patrick.

The first thing many that comes to mind at the mention of “4-H” to most people is the green, four leaf clover emblem. Continue reading “Clovers or Shamrocks”

Rabbits Teach Responsibility

Last Saturday twelve youth and their parents gathered at Anita Davis’ barn. The topic of discussion? Rabbits. Anita serves as the Harvey County 4-H Rabbit project leader. Some of the attendees have been rabbit owners for years, while others are just getting started. As a leader, Anita volunteers her time to share her knowledge and passion for raising rabbits with 4-H members.

The rabbit project is a great example of a 4-H project that is ideal for both rural and urban youth, as well as all age groups. Rabbits are a good beginning project because they adapt to many different environments, require a small investment, and teach responsibility.

This project is offered as a part of the Harvey County 4-H program, which has no membership fees. However, members are responsible for the purchase of animals, feed, health care, housing, equipment and show fees. Youth ages seven to eighteen are able to enroll in this project.
