Andrew Orr to lead History Department

A A Orr Staff Pictureglobal military historian who has been a K-State history faculty member since 2013 will lead the department starting on June 9.

Andrew Orr, professor of history, has been named chair of the history department after being selected by the department’s faculty and approved by College of Arts and Sciences Dean Chris Culbertson.

“We are pleased and grateful that Dr. Orr, with his years of experience and committee leadership in the department and the endorsement of his colleagues, will be the next chair of the history department,” said Culbertson.

Orr joined the history department as an assistant professor in 2013. He became an associate professor in 2018 and a full professor in 2024. He has served the department as the chair of the graduate studies and scheduling committees and as associate director of the security studies program.

His work focuses on the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries and explores identity and conflict, civil-military relations, gender and conflict, and the politics of war with an emphasis on France and the United States.

Orr’s books have explored the experiences of women in the French army, the Franco-Turkish War of 1919-1921, and Orientalism’s effect on contemporary American and European views of Islam and the Middle East. He has also published on intelligence history, imperialism, civil-military relations, the history of the French Communist Party, and contemporary U.S. and European foreign and defense policy.

His current projects include a book on the 1919 Black Sea Mutiny and a book on the evolution of military identity.

“Coming to K-State has allowed me to achieve things I did not know I could do, and my colleagues have enriched my life,” Orr said. “I hope that I can give back as much as K-State has given me.”

Orr received his bachelor’s degree from Claremont McKenna College and his master’s and doctorate from the University of Notre Dame.
