The Department of Hospitality Management had a great 2017-2018 year full of exciting awards, guest speakers, best papers, interesting research and more! Check out a few of these things highlighted in this article.
- November 2017, Students from K-State’s hospitality management department traveled to New York City to participate in the Smith Travel Research Student Marketing Competition at HX: The Hotel Experience Show, previously the International Hotel Motel and Restaurant Show. This is a part of research project in HM 664 (Advanced hotel operation) taught by Assistant Professor Jichul Jang. Our undergraduate and graduate teams were placed as finalist teams. The undergraduate team members selected include Emily Van Dyke, Maria Lourdes Rose Domingo, and Miranda Burkes. They all are senior students (lodging track) with a graduation of May 2018. The members of the graduate team are Juhyun Kang, Hyunghwa Oh, Michelle Alcorn Annamarie Sisson, and Neda Shabani.
- December 2017, The CHIA (Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics) was incorporated to HM 664 (Advanced Lodging Operation) class taught by Dr. Jichul Jang. The CHIA is the leading hotel-related certification for university students graduating from Hospitality and Tourism programs and a growing number of hotel industry professionals are obtaining the designation. This recognition provides evidence of a thorough knowledge of the foundational metrics, definitions, formulas, and methodologies that are used by the hotel industry. Among 20 students who took HM 664 class, 16 students received “CHIA” certification.
- January 3-5, Hyunghwa (Rick) Oh, a HM doctoral student received the Best Paper Award from the 23rd Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Fort Worth, TX. To see an article highlighting Oh’s achievement click here.
- February 13, Lacy’s Fresh Fare and Catering, located in Hoffman Lounge, Justin Hall opened its doors. Lacy’s offers sandwiches, soups and salad along with drinks, and sides like French fries, pasta salad and fruit. Cookies, brownies and cinnamon rolls are also on the breakfast menu, and are baked fresh. Lacy’s is open Tuesday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- February 12-13, Dr. Jichul Jang attended the 83rd International Tourism Conference, which was held in Incheon, South Korea. He received the Best Paper Award for his research article titled “Examining the relationship between restaurant employees’ sleep quality and service sabotage behaviors: The negative spillover effect.”
- February 26, Doug Levy, Sulgrave Club AGM spoke in Dr. Brett Horton’s HM 331: Professional Club Management class.
- March 27, alum Katrina Marshall was awarded the winner of the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation’s Rising Star Volunteer Award. Katrina is the Managing Partner at LongHorn Steakhouse in Manhattan.
- April 11, Ph.D. graduate student, Wenhao Zhang was nominated by Derby Dining for the 2018 Kyle Pelton Student Employee of the Year Award at Kansas State University.
- April 16, Laura Gilham, Vice President, People Strategy Club Corp guest spoke in HM 331.
- April 17th alum, Greg Ward came to speak in Dr. Jang’s class, HM 482: Human Resource Management in the Hospitality Industry.
- April 18, Ph.D. graduate student, Wenhao Zhang won the Top Presenter for Research Poster.
- On Monday April 23, Dr. Allan Su visited the HM department. Dr. Su is a professor in Hotel and Restaurant Management at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan. Dr. Su is a 1996 PhD Kansas State University graduate in Hospitality Management.
- April 23, HM 331 had a guest speaker, Robert Tibbitts from AGM Mission Hills Country Club
- April 25, The Hospitality Management Programs from Kansas State University Olathe and Manhattan campuses, attended the Heartland Hospitality Expo at the Marriott Hotel Downtown Kansas City.
- On Friday, April 27, 2018 Amber Wilhelm, HM undergraduate student was awarded one of eight Extraordinary Student Awards. “This award recognized and honors students who demonstrate extraordinary courage and persistence while pursuing their academic goals in the face of significant obstacles.”
- May 4, The Department of Hospitality Management recognized four undergraduate students for the Outstanding Senior Awards. The recipients and their awards are as follows:Laura Apel—Engagement; Catherine Lochner—Leadership; Madeline (Maddie) Heeter—Leadership; John Saiki—Undergraduate Research
