What experiences at K-State were helpful in your current job?
Two experiences really jump out to me about my 5 years at K-State.
K-State requirement of internships was a huge benefit. I ended up doing three internships while at K-State and I would have never have been able to gain my first job out of school without this real world experience. I was fortunate to start at one of finest clubs in the country and without the internships I wouldn’t have been considered.
Getting the required minor business administration has been a tremendous help and learning experience. I use various information every day from these courses.
What is so special about the KSU HM program?
The biggest reason that the KSU HM program is so special is I met my wife in one of my classes!
What do you do in your current job?
My job as club manager is overseeing all the day to day operations of Shoal Creek. Shoal Creek is one of the premier golf clubs in the country. We have 18-hole golf course continually ranked in the top 100. Shoal Creek has hosted two PGA championships, 1 U.S. Amateur and numerous other USGA and PGA events. We are hosting the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open. In addition to the golf course we have a 9-hole par 3 course, 36 overnight rooms, a swimming pool, fitness center and a 40,000 square foot clubhouse with a myriad of dining options.
Why are you in the hospitality business?
I am in the hospitality business because each day provides a different challenge and opportunity. I can’t even begin to recount the number of people that I have met or developed relationships over the years with whom I would never had the opportunity if I was working in a cubicle at a 9-5 office job.
In your opinion, what does it take –personally – to succeed in a career in hospitality?
I have spent the last 10 years learning from the best managers and board members within my industry. I tell my younger managers to be a sponge, you need to soak up all the information that you can get. You also have to be willing to work tremendous amounts of hours at certain times. Hard work will get you far in this business, as we have very few 9-5 days. The old saying is true we work when everyone else plays.
