Purchase “Reawakening” to Remember K-State Strong in 2021

Forget 2020! What we should remember is how our campus community persevered to come out “K-State Strong” in 2021!

Since March 2020, The Collegian newspaper, Manhappenin’ magazine, and Royal Purple yearbook staffs have been working remotely, meeting virtually and adapting and re-adapting to continual changes in campus protocols while not skipping a beat to do what they do best: publish award-winning work.

At the National Collegiate Press convention, last October, The Collegian staff earned 11 national awards, including 5th Place for Best in Show. Manhappenin’ took an Honorable Mention for Best Cover in the Design of the Year category; and, the Royal Purple won another Pacemaker – the Pulitzer of college publishing. While the recognition is nice, that’s not the reason our students do their work. They do it for you!

CMG is comprised of a team of young adults who understand the value in serving others while proudly offering our K-State family a platform for our collective voices. And, they rose to the occasion!

Last year’s Editor-in-Chief of The Collegian, Kaylie Mclaughlin, spearheaded a feat to document our K-State family resolve around COVID-19. Her effort culminated in a collector’s coffee-table book titled “Rewakening” that, for just $20, would look great in your living room!

Please consider purchasing one to support her hard work that reflects so much of what we stand for.

With My Gratitude,

David Levy

MHK Housing Project

Collegian Media Group, the independent voice of Kansas State University and publisher of The K-State Collegian, Manhappenin’ Magazine, the Royal Purple, and the Parent and Family Guide, are proud to launch a new free resource for Kansas State students, faculty, and staff as well as Manhattan residents: MHKhousing.com, the first official off-campus housing website of its kind. The website is fully run and operated by the student staff.

The easy-to-navigate website filters rentals by exact specifications, allowing users to select from various criteria including distance from campus, price range and size. Users can then access a list of available housing based on the parameters, and property managers will be notified to speed up communication.
With a distance range of one mile to over ten miles from campus, students can find rentals within walking distance of their classes. A wide price range also improves accessibility for those in the housing market.
Listings provide detailed descriptions of each available property. Upon selecting a rental, users are met with the floor plan, amenities, rental rates and lease terms. Quality photos showcasing the entire property and virtual tours are also available. The filters on the homepage make the website a user-friendly search tool to find available rentals year-round.
This new, invaluable tool is essential if you plan to have your student live off-campus during their stay at Kansas State University.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update from Lafene Health Center

Kansas State University has been selected as a COVID-19 closed point vaccine distribution site. This means the university will be receiving and administering vaccines exclusively for students, faculty and staff based on the state and local priority groups and vaccine availability.

K-State has not received vaccines yet or been given a vaccine delivery date. The university is actively preparing for distribution so that vaccines can be administered as soon as possible when they are available.

All current faculty, staff and students were sent an email on Monday, February 1, from Lafene Health Center. The email included a link with directions for completing a survey about the COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals were asked to go to the myLafene+ patient portal, sign in and go to Survey Forms.

Individuals who did not receive the email are asked to contact Lafene Health Center at lafene@k-state.edu with their Wildcat ID and eID. The subject line should be COVID Vaccination Request.

Completing the survey will assist K-State and local health officials in identifying how many people are in each priority group and will help communicate with individuals once they are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The university has established a comprehensive plan based on state and local priority groups.

Individuals are encouraged to complete the COVID-19 vaccine survey with Lafene Health Center AND through their resident county as available. Individuals should complete the vaccination sequence through the organization that contacts them first.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment Is allocating the vaccine in the state of Kansas. The university and county health department vaccine phases are aligned. The university must follow the phase timeline for the county.

Lafene Health Center has increased their asymptomatic COVID-19 testing sites by offering remote testing clinics Tuesday through Friday at places like Kramer Dining Center, Derby Dining Center, the Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex, and the Union. Lafene’s onsite asymptomatic clinic is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. and we continue to test individuals who are symptomatic or have been identified as a close contact. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Lafene has provided almost 20,000 tests.

Students continue to be encouraged to wear a face covering, stay six feet apart and avoid crowds, and wash their hands often.
More information about the COVID-19 vaccine and a list of frequently asked questions can be found on the K-State COVID-19 vaccine information website.

The Center for Advocacy, Response and Education (CARE)

The Center for Advocacy, Response and Education (CARE) serves students, staff, and faculty that experience(d) various forms of sexual and interpersonal violence. All of CARE’s services are free, confidential, and entirely voluntary. Between October and December 2020, CARE served 40 survivors, including 13 survivors of sexual assault, 5 adults that experienced childhood sexual abuse, 14 survivors of domestic and/or relationship abuse, and 8 survivors of stalking and harassment. Our advocates delivered over 537 services to these survivors, including:

  • Court accompaniments for protection orders and criminal cases
  • Crisis intervention and referrals to therapists throughout the Manhattan community
  • Academic support such as accommodations and excused absence verification
  • Self-care and mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation
  • Paperwork assistance for protection orders and victim impact statements

In addition to direct services and advocacy, CARE also provides educational programs and presentations to the K-State community. K-State’s bystander intervention program, “Wildcats Make a Pact,” in collaboration with Interfraternity Council, trained over 317 first-year fraternity men during the Fall 2020 semester. Our bystander intervention program teaches how to be a pro-social bystander and how to prevent violence before it occurs. Other educational presentation topics include healthy relationships, trauma-informed care and services, as well as technology misuse by perpetrators.

CARE is happy to continue to provide support to survivors of sexual and interpersonal violence in this tumultuous time. If you or someone you know has a question about our services or would like to meet with an advocate, please contact us at ksucare@ksu.edu or call our office at (785) 532-6444. We are located at Holton 206.
