COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge

wildcat wellcat

Greetings from Lafene Health Center!

Summer is always such a busy time for us as we prepare for the fall.  The weeks just keep flying by and the students will be back before we know it.  We are looking forward to getting back to “normal” on campus.  For the safety and health of all our patients and staff, requirements for face coverings and physical distancing remain in effect at Lafene Health Center.

Vaccinations are the best way to protect yourself and our campus communities.  Unvaccinated students who can receive the COVID-19 vaccine are strongly encouraged to do so prior to arriving on campus.  Lafene Health Center continues to offer COVID-19 vaccination opportunities for K-State students.  We are currently offering the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine until our supply is exhausted.  Once that happens, we plan to offer a two-dose vaccine.  Appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine or other needed vaccinations can be made on our myLafene+ Patient Portal or by calling 785-532-6544.

Kansas State University is contributing to a nationwide campaign to end the COVID-19 pandemic by having at least 70% of K-State students, faculty and staff vaccinated by the beginning of the fall 2021 semester.  K-State has joined the COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge, which is a joint initiative from the White House and the U.S. Department of Education.  The initiative is part of President Joe Biden’s goal to administer at least one vaccine shot to at least 70% of adult Americans and of 160 million Americans being fully vaccinated by July 4.

We believe it’s important to offer an easy, affordable way to protect the investment your family has made in higher education. That’s why K-State has negotiated with GradGuard™ to provide our families with tuition insurance featuring special plans and rates not available to the general public.

This coverage expands the scope of our refund policy by ensuring reimbursement for tuition, room and board and other fees for covered withdrawals at any time during the semester. Plans also include GradGuard’s Student Life Assistance: a 24-hour emergency hotline that offers students and parents even greater peace of mind.

Please also remember, your Office of Student Life is also always available to assist when needed.

You can cancel your coverage at any time, and be reimbursed at a pro-rated amount.

Part-time Opportunities Fair this Summer!

ptofIs your new or returning Wildcat seeking a part-time job for the fall semester? Then encourage them to participate in the Part-time Opportunities Fair offered this summer by the K-State Career Center. The fair will be hosted virtually from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central on Friday, July 23, 2021.

The Part-time Opportunities Fair is a great way for students to be able to connect with employers on campus, and in the Manhattan community, as they plan their schedule and budget prior to the school year. Fair employers will be using video, audio and text-based chat to communicate with student participants.

“We are excited to once again connect area employers with new and returning K-State students. Many campus departments and local businesses are anxious to find help before students arrive in Manhattan this fall,” said Kerri Day Keller, executive director of the Career Center.

In addition to connections with prospective employers, students can also participate in online workshops with the Career Center and Powercat Financial during the fair. Learn how to apply for campus jobs, write a resume and interview in person or online with workshops from the Career Center. Learn how Powercat Financial can help students with creating a personalized college financial plan, or with understanding financial aid and part-time work.

Beginning in July, students should register for the fair and RSVP for workshops and employer sessions in the Career Center’s online recruiting system, Handshake.  For more information, visit the Career Center website https://www.k-state.edu/careercenter/ or email questions to careercenter@ksu.edu. We can’t wait to see your students there!

Community Spotlight: Manhattan Municipal Band Turns 100

bandphotoManhattan, KS has had a tax-supported Municipal Band since 1920 when the city adopted a tax levy for that purpose. The band played its first concert on the lawn of Riley County Courthouse. Over the years the band’s membership has come has come from all conceivable walks of life, including students, staff, and faculty from Kansas State University, Manhattan Christian College and surrounding public schools, as well as military and civilian personnel from nearby Fort Riley, representatives of the community’s diverse private sector, clergy, and retirees.

The Manhattan Municipal Band is very proud of it’s history and its place as a central part of life in Manhattan.  Nearly every resident of this town has somehow been touched by the municipal band, whether as a performing member or as a part of our audience. After a century of service to central Kansas we look forward to continued growth and excellence. If you are, or have ever been a member of the Manhattan Municipal Band, we hope that you will always take pride in that affiliation. If you have ever been a member of our audience we thank you for your support and hope for your many returns.
