Spring 2023 News

Dear friends, colleagues, and alumni of K-State Plant Pathology!

We are excited to share some of our news and accomplishments from the last year. Our faculty, staff, and students have made excellent contributions in research, teaching, extension, and service. One highlight of the last year was a high number of student graduations – 10! We are very proud of these students, especially since they persevered to finish despite the very challenging pandemic conditions that affected a large part of their time with us. We also welcomed numerous new employees and students, and we gave a fond farewell to several retirees. Please read on to learn more about the department’s recent activities. Lastly, be sure to check out our website which has a new, modern look-and-feel that is aligned with K-State’s new university aesthetic. 

Awards, Recognitions, and Grants 

Our Department continues its track record of success in external grants, awards, and other recognitions. In calendar year 2022 we secured more than $5 million of external funding to support our research and extension programs. Here are just a few recent highlights shared by our faculty:

Dr. Shahideh Nouri was awarded $700,000 from USDA-NIFA for wheat streak mosaic virus project in collaboration with KAUST. Wheat Streak Mosaic (WSM) is one of the most economically important viral diseases of wheat with an estimated annual loss of 1.5-5.6% of the U.S. wheat crop. This project will explore a large panel of Aegilops tauschii accessions for resistance/tolerance to WSMV using association mapping with whole-genome sequencing data to identify resistance loci which can be subsequently used for wheat improvement.

Dr. Kelsey Andersen Onofre and colleagues were awarded $1 million from NIFA for work on Tilletia. The project will leverage the fundamental biological differences between several bunt species to develop more robust and sensitive diagnostic procedures.

PhD Candidate Upasana Dhakal received Nunemacher scholarship from the K-State College of Agriculture, Tillman scholarship from the Department, and travel awards from the Genetics Society of America and K-State’s Graduate Student Council.  

Dr. Kelsey Andersen Onofre received the Communicator of the Year from K-State Research and Extension. The award is presented annually by the K-State Department of Communications and Agricultural Education members and the Kansas chapter of the Association for Communication Excellence (ACE), the international professional association for extension communicators.

PhD student Afsana Noor was recognized by the American Phytopathological Society Office of International Programs as Student of the Week. Congratulations Afsana! As noted below Afsana has now graduated. She is now working as a postdoctoral research in our department with Dr. Little.

PhD student Jun Huang earned the Alvin and RosaLee Sarachek Predoctoral Honors Fellowship in Molecular Biology. PhD student Joel Steyer earned the Alvin and RosaLee Sarachek Scientific Travel Award. Congratulations Jun and Joel! Both students have now graduated from KSU and have moved on to postdoctoral positions.

Graduate students Afsana Noor, Ravi Bika, and Anusha Dahal were recognized in October, November, and December as part of the students-of-the month. Congratulations!

Dr. Sanzhen Liu was funded by DOE as a co-PI to work on improvement of nitrogen use efficiency in sorghum with collaboration with University of Nebraska-Lincoln. 

Dr. Eduard Akhunov delivered the prestigious Calvin Sperling Memorial Lectureship at the fall CSSA conference. Eduard gave a lecture titled, “The Quest to Find Adaptive Diversity in Wild Relatives to Improve Wheat.”

Dr. Chris Toomajian earned ongoing funding from the US Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative.

Dr. Marty Draper received the North Central APS Distinguished Service Award in June 2022 to recognize his career-long achievements and contributions to our region in research, teaching, extension, and service. Congratulations Dr. Draper on this prestigious recognition!

New Hires 

Raissa Debacker Moura joined the Andersen Onofre lab as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Spring 2022. She completed her MSc in Biotechnology at Federal University of Espirito Santo, Brazil, and her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Federal University of Espirito Santo,Brazil. In her current role with Dr. Andersen Onofre, Raissa focuses on rapid diagnostic techniques and works on projects characterizing genotypic and phenotypic diversity for pathogens that cause common bunt and dwarf bunt in wheat and related species.  

 

 

Mayela Romero Flores joined the Akhunov lab as a Research Associate in Winter 2022. She completed her MS in Biology at Metropolitan Autonomous University, Mexico. In her current role with Dr. Akhunov’s team, Mayela supports ongoing research projects in the Wheat Genetics Resource Center by providing DNA sequencing, genotyping and gene expression. 

 

 

 

 

Amy Geyer joined the Business Hub as the Office/Extension Specialist in Summer 2022. Amy attended Kansas State University and Highland Community College and worked previously in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Vet Med. In her current role, Amy works with the Extension Diagnostic Team as well as acts as the primary administrative support for the Department and Business Hub. 

 

 

 

 

Daniel Hopper joined the Akhunov lab as a Research Assistant in Fall 2022. He completed his BS in Agricultural Economics with a minor in Horticulture at Kansas State University. He most recently worked as an Assistant Scientist in the Sorghum Breeding Lab in the K-State Agronomy Department. In his current role, Daniel actively works with Wheat Genetics Resource Center supporting field and greenhouse experiments. He helps to maintain and operate the greenhouse and field facilities as well as plants, maintains and harvests field and greenhouse-grown genetic material for research projects.  

 

Jaideep Mallick began his work as the Fungal Genetic Stock Center (FGSC) Curator in Winter 2022. He completed his Master of Philosophy in Bio-Chemistry and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. He most recently worked as a Scientist in Quebec, Canada. In his current role, Jaideep is an essential part of the management of day-to-day operations of the FGSC as well as helps to represent the FGSC at scientific and technical meetings and assists with the organization of workshops under the auspices of the FGSC. 

 

 

Ankita Mishra joined the Akhunov lab as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Fall 2022. She completed her PhD in Biotechnology at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. She most recently worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the DBT-National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute in Punja, India. In her new role, Ankita will help to map and characterize genes and pathways underlying variation in disease resistance and/or productivity traits in wheat with the final goal of applying knowledge for crop improvement. 

 

 

Haley Scott began her work as a Research Technician with the Stack Lab in Spring 2022. Haley received her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Kansas State University in December 2021. She previously worked with the USDA APHIS PPQ Domestic Identifier Laboratory and the Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab as an undergrad. In her current role, Haley works in the biosafety level (BSL-) 1 and 2 laboratories as well as in the BSL-3 laboratory within our state-of-the-art biocontainment facility conducting research with a select agent bacterium.

 

  

Ann Treinen joined the Business Hub as the Human Capital Specialist in Summer 2022. Ann has worked at K-State since 1998, beginning as an Administrative Officer in the Controller’s Office. In 2017, she was selected to join the Administrative Support Center as a Human Capital Representative. In her Human Capital Specialist role, she helps to support the HR efforts for both Horticulture & Natural Resources and Plant Pathology.  

 

 

 

 

Mallory Whitman was hired in Spring 2022 as the Human Capital Analyst in the Business Hub. She has worked in higher education human resources since 2019 and most recently was employed as the Employment Coordinator at Cameron University until her family relocated to Manhattan. In her role as a Human Capital Analyst, Mallory helps to lead the HR efforts for both Horticulture & Natural Resources and Plant Pathology.

Claudio Dias da Silva – Graduate Research Assistant – Spring 2023

Claudio is a PhD graduate student coming from Sao Paulo, Brazil. His educational background is in phytopathology, molecular biology, diagnosis, isolation, and statistical analysis.

Madison is a MS graduate student who graduated in Spring 2022 from Clemson University. Her educational background is in Biological Sciences, Plant Pathology and Biochemistry. 

Tom McAnany – Graduate Research Assistant – Spring 2023 

(Supervisor: Dr. David Cook) 

Tom is a MSc graduate student in Genetics coming from Kansas State University. His educational background is in Plant Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology.  

Aiden McVey – Graduate Research Assistant – Fall 2022

Aiden is a PhD graduate student in Genetics coming from Montana State University. His educational background is in Biotechnology.

Nick is a Ph.D. graduate student in Genetics from Rockwell City, IA. His educational background is in Genetics.

Promotions 

Three faculty promotions became official in summer 2022. We recognize the excellence in their programs and look forward to their future contributions as they take their careers to the next step.

Personnel Changes 

  • Sarah Bastian – Sarah began her new role as the Project/Program Coordinator in the Akhunov Lab in September 2022. She previously was a Research Assistant with Dr. Akhunova’s team.  
  • Chandler Day – Chandler began a new position as Associate Diagnostician in the Plant Diagnostic Lab in January 2022. She previously was the Assistant Director in the Great Plains Diagnostic Network. 
  • Afsana Noor – Afsana began her new role as a Fellow (PostDoc) in December 2022 with the Little Lab after completing her PhD in Plant Pathology. 
  • Nar Ranabhat – Nar started in his new role as a Fellow (PostDoc) in August 2022 with the Stack Lab after completing his PhD in Plant Pathology. 
  • Wei Wang – Wei departed after 9 years as a Fellow (PostDoc) then a Research Assistant Professor to begin a faculty position. We will miss Wei but congratulate him on taking this next exciting step in his career. 
  • Shuangye Wu – Shuangye transitioned into a new role in the Crain Lab as a Research Associate in June 2022. She previously was a Research Associate with the WGRC.

Retirements 

Congratulations to Duane Wilson who retired in summer 2022 after more than 40 years of service. Duane was integral to the success of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center (WGRC), running key aspects of the greenhouse and field program. One of the many highlights of Duane’s time was his outstanding mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Duane was always ready to lend a hand. We will miss his dedication and kind heart. We wish him the best. 

 

Bruce Ramundo retired from Kansas State University after more than 40 years of service as an Associate Scientist in the Department of Plant Pathology. Bruce worked in the laboratories of four faculty members, supporting key research on viral, bacterial and fungal plant pathogens. He has been a key player in the national/international success and reputation of the Fusarium Workshop. In addition, he has been an outstanding department safety officer. The Department will truly miss Bruce’s strong work ethic, patience, and sense of humor. We wish him the best in his retirement.

 

Diagnostic and Extension highlights 

The extension team engaged with stakeholders all over the state of Kansas this past year. Collectively, the team authored five formal extension publications, published 56 newsletter articles (primarily through the Agronomy eUpdates, and K-State Turf & Landscape Blog) delivered 87 presentations, participated in 12 radio interviews, and provided more than 1,000 disease diagnoses through the K-State Plant Diagnostic Lab. 2022 was a particularly busy year for wheat virus testing. The team has developed a new PCR diagnostic test for Fusarium virguliforme, sudden death syndrome (SDS) and is working closely with our wheat research team to plan for the 2023 wheat virus testing season. On the home landscape and garden side Judy O’Mara contributed to online and in-person Extension Master Gardener Training and the online K-State Garden Hour which started in the pandemic but continues to be a highly valued resource. Finally, Megan Kennelly contributed a much-expanded chapter in the newly-revised Kansas Garden Guide.

Other special highlights 

Our department is active in professional and academic service here at K-State and in our professional societies. Here are a few recent highlights: 

Dr. Chris Little finished a 3-year term on Faculty Senate including serving on the Faculty Affairs Committee. Faculty Senate is a key piece of shared governance at the university and works on policy updates, curriculum changes, and other broad initiatives. Serving as a senator takes time and dedication. Thank you Dr. Little. 

Dr. Richard Todd is serving Aspergillus Genomes Research Policy Group Executive Committee and is the chair of this  international group that coordinates international Aspergillus (Asperfest) meetings and Aspergillus community resources 

Dr. Harold Trick has resumed his role as chair of the K-State Institutional Biosafety Committee. The IBC plays a key role on campus to ensure research is conducted following all appropriate protocols.  

Dr. Alina Akhunova, Director of the Integrated Genomics Facility, did an outstanding job equipping the IGF with a new Chromium iX (10X Genomics) and the Sequel IIe system (PacBio). We appreciate Dr. Akhunova’s dedication to keeping K-State on the cutting edge genomics technologies. The IGF ran a successful Genomics Technologies Workshop in summer 2022 which was well received after the covid19 disruptions to the workshop in recent years. 

Dr. David Cook has stepped into the role of Graduate Program Director for Plant Pathology. Dr. Cook is now leading recruitment, onboarding, and academic program facilitation for the program. Early in his role Dr. Cook conducted surveys of faculty and student applications to help make strategies for moving the program forward.

The Department ran its summer Research and Extension Experiences for Undergraduates program again in 2022. We hosted 12 participants from all over the US. Students were placed with mentors in Plant Pathology, Entomology, Horticulture & Natural Resources, Biochemistry, and Agronomy. Students completed independent research, took many field trips, attended sessions on science communication and other professional development topics, and presented posters in a final symposium. 

Dr. Shahideh Nouri completed the Coffman Institute, a multi-part leadership training program hosted by K-State with participants from across the university.

Dr. Barbara Valent awarded the Commerce Bank Distinguished Graduate Faculty award

Dr. Barbara Valent was selected as one of the two Commerce Bank Distinguished Graduate Faculty awardees for the current academic year. This award honors current members of the graduate faculty who are recognized nationally and internationally for their outstanding scholarly achievements and for their contributions to graduate education at the university. Dr. Eduard Akhunov becomes Director of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center

Dr. Eduard Akhunov has stepped into the role of Wheat Genetics Resource Center (WGRC) Director as a part of his faculty appointment. Dr. Akhunov brings excellent scientific depth & breadth plus many national and international connections to the role. The WGRC is a world-renowned gene bank with a critical collection of wild wheat relatives and key cytogenetic stocks. The center’s collections help support and facilitate wheat research around the world. Moreover, high-impact research is conducted right here at KSU by the WGRC.

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for the Reduction of Post-Harvest Loss receives additional funding 

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for the Reduction of Post-Harvest Loss received a $1 million, one year extension from USAID for Year 9 (calendar year 2022). The funding supports work to move research innovations into scaling in Bangladesh and Ghana. The lab also received a $25,000 seed funding grant from Mars Inc. to extend mycotoxin risk communication work. These funds will support John Leslie, Jeff Morris (KSU Vice President for Communications and Marketing) and Jagger Harvey to extend past work in this area. Dr. Harvey serves as the lead of the Food Safety Alliance’s Workstream on Risk Communication and Training. 

While in Ghana in December, the PHLIL team met with the Mayor of Accra’s agriculture team. They are seeking the program’s support to help implement the Mayor’s vision of transforming the urban food system, including the reduction of food loss and improvements in food safety.

Upasana Dhakal received the Robert Nunemacher award and the Tillman family graduate student award

PhD student Upasana Dhakal, advised by Dr. Chris Toomajian, received the Robert Nunemacher award (2021-2022), the Tillman family graduate student award, and a GCS “travel” award for the online APS Plant Health 2021 conference, where she presented a (virtual) poster.

Daniel Tran Awarded Cancer Research Award

Personnel Changes 

Ved Prakash joined the Nouri lab as a Post Doctoral Fellow. He is originally from Varanasi, India. He completed his master’s in Applied Microbiology from Banaras Hindu University, India, and his Ph.D. in plant-pathogen interactions in the lab of Prof. S Chakraborty at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. After his Ph.D., he worked with Dr. Ramesh V Sonti as a Senior Research Fellow in the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR) for a year, focusing on generating CRISPR-CAS9 edited rice varieties. He recently completed his first post-doc experience in the lab of Dr. Clare L Casteel at Cornell University. In his current role with Dr. Nouri, he will focus on the biology and molecular biology of insect-specific viruses and their interactions with the insect host/vector, as well as the mechanism of viral tolerance of wheat wild relatives and wheat viruses.  He enjoys wildlife, particularly bird-watching and identifying butterflies. He also loves playing cricket.

 

Joe Plankinton joined Throckmorton Computing Services as a new IT Support Specialist II. He has a BS in Technology Management from Kansas State University. An Army Veteran, his previous experience includes being a Computer System Analysis/ Systems Administrator, where he was a liaison between the Fort Riley NEC (a civilian world internet service provider) and a contractor using the military Non-Secure Internet Protocol Router. He provided desktop support, employee accounts for access and support for any other network-related issues. He has also been a System Administrator for the Aircraft Control Notebook system for a contractor, in charge of infrastructure, equipment inventory, active directory, and other network-related items. He’s also done his own entrepreneurial work. In his current role, he provides desktop support for Agronomy, Horticulture and Natural Resources, and Plant Pathology. Outside of work, he enjoys Jeep’n, fishing, traveling, exploring nature, and the outdoors. 

 

Barbara Kachigunda. We are so excited to have Dr. Barbara Kachigunda as a visiting Fullbright scholar with Jim Stack. Barbara will be here through July of 2022. Barbara currently lives in Perth Australia. She received her Ph.D. from Murdoch University. Her Ph.D. research focused on analyzing border interceptions of non-indigenous species to Barrow Island using novel statistical methods. After completing her Ph.D., she was appointed Academic Chair of Research Training and Education with the Graduate Research School at Murdoch University. She currently does statistical training and consulting for the graduate school. The school has recently launched an accelerated Research Training Master’s program, and she has been helping develop training material for that as well as continuing her research. She enjoys baking, reading, watching documentaries, walking, and traveling. She’s a motivational speaker advocating for women to take up STEMM projects and volunteers with the elderly, advocating for using music as a therapy for dementia.

 

Rodrigo Borba Onofre

Dr. Rodrigo Onofre transitioned to an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist for row crops (soybean, sorghum, corn, etc). Dr. Onofre is originally from Conceição da Aparecida, Brazil. He holds a PhD in Plant Pathology from the University of Florida and a BS in Agronomic Engineering from the Federal University of Vicosa-Brazil. Dr. Onofre brings a very strong background in applied disease management and extension to our department. 

 

 

 

During Fall 2021, the business office joined forces with the business office of Horticulture and Natural Resources. While the departments remain separate departments academically, combining the business functions of the departments will provide depth/backup in office staffing, increase the efficiency of our business practices, and strengthen the services provided. Julie Wilburn joined the financial team as an Accountant. Born and raised in Atchinson, KS, Julie lived in Manhattan for about three years and then moved to Wamego where she currently resides. She comes with us with 25 years of experience in Administration Finance and has held 4 different positions. She has previously audited travel vouchers and helped department employees with travel questions and reimbursements. She’s worked in the Cashier’s office, helping students with their Emergency Student Loans and Perkins Loans. Then audited Business Procurement Cards (BPCs) for all the departments across campus. Her most recent role was working in the Purchasing Department helping departments write specifications, posting bids on the items or services that were over $10,000 for competitive bidding, and helping departments find available KSU contracts that are approved for use. Outside the office, she enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her favorite holiday is Christmas because of all the decorations, trees, and lights; she loves seeing her grandchildren and other children get excited about what Santa Claus will deliver under their Christmas tree!

New Graduate Students

Ravi Bika from Jyamire, Nepal, joined us as a new Graduate Research Assistant (Ph.D.) in Plant Pathology under Sanzhen Liu. He recently completed his MS in Plant Pathology from Tennessee State University, where his research focused on the integrated management of foliar diseases of ornamental plants using biological control agents, host defense inducers, and chemicals. His current research interest lies in understanding the biology of pathogens, genetic and molecular mechanisms that control pathogenicity and disease development, factors triggering pathogens from being inactive to aggressive, and identifying the genes involved in disease resistance to various pathogens. Outside of the lab, he likes to go on road trips, hiking, watching movies and sports, playing guitar, and team sports like soccer, volleyball, and cricket. His favorite holiday is Tihar, where they celebrate by decorating their houses with colorful lights. He loves the foods, culture, singing and dancing, and happiness in family and society.

Hello everyone,

Labor Day has passed but the high temperatures early this week still feel like summer. So, happy late summer! Fall semester is underway. KSU is holding a primarily face-to-face semester back on campus but with some modifications still in place. Awards and Recognitions 

Barbara Valent received the 2021 Iman Outstanding Faculty Award

Barbara Valent, a University Distinguished Professor and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, received the prestigious Iman Award in recognition of her outstanding research. This award is sponsored by the K-State Alumni Association and is made possible through the generosity of Ron and Rae Iman. Dr. Valent has studied the rice blast fungus (Magnaporthe oryzae) for more than 40 years, and is currently focusing on a pathotype of this fungus that infects wheat. Congratulations, Dr. Valent! 

Dr. Eduard Akhunov was promoted to University Distinguished Professor

The title of University Distinguished Professor is the highest honor the university bestows on its faculty members and recognizes their outstanding contributions to teaching, research and service to their professions and communities. Dr. Akhunov’s lab specializes in bread wheat genetics and developing new resources and tools for improving this vital crop. In his research, he uses next-generation sequencing technologies, bioinformatics, high-throughput phenotyping, molecular genetics and genome editing to develop germplasm with improved disease resistance, grain quality and yield potential.

 

Dr. Alina Akhunova receives the 2021 College of Agriculture Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award

Dr. Akhunova has made significant contributions to graduate training through her workshops and has helped students on their individual research projects as the Director of the K-State Integrated Genomics Facility. Congratulations on your excellent work with students, Dr. Akhunova! We appreciate your dedication to students and to all your clients at KSU and across the globe.

 

Plant Pathology Department announces undergraduate scholarship recipients for 2021-2022

Jaime Knight, Jered Norris, Sydney Stutz, and Daniel Tran were awarded the Tillman Family Memorial Agriculture Scholarship. This award is given to undergraduate students who show excellent academic record and engagement with plant pathology programs and/or formal undergraduate research in the department. Congratulations to these outstanding students. The Department thanks the donors and acknowledges the selection committee for their efforts in the review process.

 

Joel Steyer received Graduate Cancer Research Award

This award is given to outstanding graduate students working in a Johnson Cancer Research Center member lab. Joel Steyer is a Ph.D. candidate in the Genetics Program working in Dr. Richard Todd’s lab. Disruptions in cellular metabolism, cell growth, and proper transcription factor function contribute as underlying causes of many cancer diseases, so Joel’s project aims to characterize the roles and functions of transcription factors in the metabolism of the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine to better understand their function in cellular growth.

Elina Adhikari received 2021 Women in Triticum Award

Elina Adhikari, a former Ph.D. student in Dr. Akhunov’s lab was awarded one of the 2021 Jeanie Borlaug Laube Women in Triticum awards from the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative. This award recognizes talent and dedication from early career women scientists working in triticum and its relatives. Dr. Adhikari is currently working as a Research Associate at University of Wisconsin, Madison. Congratulations on your successes and good luck in the new position, Elina. 

 

Upasana Dhakal won the 2021 K-State International Student Scholarship

Upasana Dhakal, PhD student in Chris Toomajian’s lab, received the competitive 2021 International Student Scholarship. This award is given to those who show exceptional academic abilities and involvement in campus activities. Congratulations, Upasana.

Upasana Dhakal won second place for her poster titled “Analysis of population structure of Fusarium graminearum isolates”. Nar Ranabhat (Dr. Jessica Rupp’s lab) won first place for his oral presentation titled “A method of accurate viral quantification and viability determination in mechanical inoculations of wheat streak mosaic virus” in the Agricultural Sciences section. The K-GRAD Forum provides graduate students from all disciplines an opportunity to present their research with the K-State community. Congratulations, Upasana and Nar!

 

Personnel Changes 

Alexandra Dominguez joined the Akhunov lab as a Research Assistant. Originally from Sycamore, Illinois, she received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology and her Master’s degree in Agronomy, both from Kansas State University. She was previously an undergrad student and grad student for the department of Agronomy and specialized in wheat breeding and Genetics. Before starting graduate school, she worked at an agricultural contract research company in Larned, KS for two years and managed GMO and efficacy trials. She’s currently working on projects for the NIFA-IWYP breeding hub, which involves trait transfer by marker assisted backcrossing with the goal to increase wheat yields while keeping disease resistance. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, road trips, cats, and anime. Her favorite summer treat is cookies and cream ice cream. She says “Oreos and ice cream together are the best of both worlds.” She and her husband enjoy road tripping to a National Park every summer and hiking, spending time together, and enjoying the sun. 

 

Sathish Raj Rajendran is working under Dr. Dal-Hoe Koo as a Postdoctoral Fellow. He is from Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, India and received his PhD in Biotechnology from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. While completing his PhD, he worked on heat and drought stress in rice and won the best PhD Thesis Award in Rice Physiology in 2017. He was previously a Postdoc in Agronomy. In his current role, he is involved in the molecular characterization of extrachromosomal circular DNA in palmer amaranth using ChIP-seq. Outside of work, he enjoys playing chess and cooking. 

 

Karina Stott is from Walton, Nebraska (Go Big Red!).She completed her BS in Agronomy and BS in Plant Protection Science from the University of Nebraska. After completing her undergraduate degrees, she worked for Monsanto for two years and then two years at New Lead Symbiotics, both in St. Louis Missouri. She then returned to school and completed her MS in Plant Pathology from North Dakota State University. She most recently worked for Syngenta in Woodland, CA as an Assistant Plant Pathologist working on cucurbit pathology. In her current role as a Research Associate, she works under Kelsey Andersen Onofre and Erick DeWolf on Fusarium head blight and stripe rust integrated management and epidemiology projects in both the greenhouse and the field. Outside of work, she enjoys gardening, baking, board games, and reading sci/fi fantasy books. Her favorite summer activity is kayaking. 

 

Samantha ElledgeSamantha Elledge joined the Akhunova lab as a Research Assistant. From Green, KS, she earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Kansas. When she’s not working in the Integrated Genomics Facility, she enjoys working with fiberarts, aquascaping, bothering her pets, and seeing how many houseplants she can kill off. Her favorite holiday is Independence Day, because, “there’s good food, good weather (usually), and the chance to dabble in pyrotechnics. What more could you want?” 

 

 

Michelle Kejr is the new Website and Digital  Communications Specialist for Throckmorton Hall. Originally from Brookville, KS, she graduated with a BS in family studies and human services from K-State and a Bachelor’s in Bible/Leadership from Manhattan Christian College. Her career in web design and social media started more as a side hustle, as she started helping friends, family, and others build and update websites. The rest is history, so they say. She currently updates and maintains the websites for Plant Pathology, Horticulture and Agronomy and manages the social media accounts for all three departments. She will create a structure for updates for both web and social media, develop long term campaigns and goals, and interpret the analytics from web traffic and social media. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, playing video/board games with friends, expanding and reading her library, and controlling the urge to turn her apartment into a greenhouse. Her favorite holiday is Star Wars Day (May the fourth be with you). She also enjoys Christmas or Thanksgiving, when she gets to have siblings and family around. 

 

Tej Man Tamang joined the Liu lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow. He’s from Ramechhap, Nepal. His name may sound familiar because he just finished his PhD in Horticulture and Natural Resources from Kansas State University. During his studies, he was a Graduate Research Assistant under Dr. Sunghun Park, right here in Throckmorton. He is interested in understanding the underlying mechanism of corn tissue regeneration and will use tools in bioinformatics and gene editing to validate genes responsible for tissue regeneration. When he’s not at work, he enjoys hiking and watching sports. His favorite holiday is Christmas, because he enjoys looking at the lights. 

 

Ural Yunusbaev joins us all the way from Ufa, Russia. His background is in plant ecology, grass/crop field experiments, genomics, and bioinformatics. He earned his PhD from Bashkir State University in Russia. He has previously worked as a researcher at the University of Tartu, Estonia and most recently was a Research Professor at Incheon National University in South Korea. He’s currently working as a Fellow Post Doc specializing in bioinformatics for the Akhunov lab with a focus on developing computational tools for long reads-based reference-free sequencing of the wheat genome and studying the association between genomic variants and pathogen resistance in wheat. His hobbies include biking, fishing, basketball and traveling. His favorite holiday is Christmas, because he likes Santa and his presents.

 

Graduate Research Assistants

Sophie Filbert joined the Trick Lab as a new Graduate Research Assistant (MS) in Plant Pathology in December. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy and was previously a student worker in Dr. Trick’s lab. Through internships, she has quite a bit of previous experience in small plot field research, and she’s excited to learn more about what research in a lab is like. One of her favorite hobbies is working out; she loves kickboxing at 9Round. She also likes to spend time with friends, do DIY projects, and go kayaking. Her favorite summer treat is fresh sweet corn, and her favorite holiday is Christmas because she gets to spend time with her family, eat a lot of great food, and celebrate the birth of Jesus. 

 

Originally from McLoud Oklahoma, Jennifer Abshire is pursuing her PhD in Plant Pathology. As a new Graduate Research Assistant under Kelsey Andersen Onofre, her research interest is focused on Wheat Common bunt. Outside of work, she enjoys gardening and hiking. Anusha Dahal is a new Graduate Research Assistant (MS) in Plant Pathology under Jessica Rupp. She comes from Ithahari, Nepal and is interested in Fusarium Head blight of Wheat and Kernza and development of disease resistant varieties. She is interested in fungal diseases and disease management through development of resistant cultivars. Her hobbies include learning new languages and cultures, traveling, interior design, hiking, and cooking. Outside of work, she enjoys camping and gardening. Her favorite holiday is Holi, the Festival of Colors (a playful festival where people throw colored powder among friends and families, eat delicious food, sing, dance, and have a lot of fun). 

 

pratima subeditPratima Subedi, from Parbat, Nepal, is a new Graduate Research Assistant (PhD) in Plant Pathology under David Cook. Her research interest is focused on understanding the interaction between microbes and plants, both their biological and molecular aspects. When she’s not doing research, she loves photography, exploring new places, watching sunrises and sunsets, reading poetry, and trying new cuisines, hiking, and biking. Her favorite holiday is Christmas because of the decorations, lights, presents, and the ambiance that comes along with it. She says it’s the perfect time to be with family and friends. 

 

Graduations/Transitions

Farewell to Dr. Jesse Poland

Dr. Jesse Poland departed KSU in late summer to start a new faculty position at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. Jesse has had an outstanding program at KSU, and the Department hopes there are many strong connections and collaborations in the future. Dr. Poland’s program at KSU focused on genomic selection, high throughput phenotyping, and wheat genetics, all with an ultimate goal of improved food security and farm profitability. He and his team published well over 100 papers including in high profile journals. Jesse and his team have given academic talks and practical trainings all over the world, with high impact to researchers and breeders in many countries. He was promoted to Professor in spring 2021. Congratulations to Dr. Poland on all his achievements – too many to list here! Best wishes to Jesse and his entire family as they take this next exciting professional and personal step to a new adventure.

Carla Redila

Guifang Lin

Dissertation: Genetic dissection of maize regeneration and wheat disease resistance

New position:

Upon graduation, Guifang transitioned to a full-time post-doc with the Liu lab.  In her new role, she will focus on the research and genetics and genomics of blast fungus and continue work on the genetics of maize regeneration and other traits. Outside of the office, she enjoys playing volleyball and badminton. Her favorite summer treat is ice cream and her favorite holiday is halloween because it’s fun to have the treats with the kids. 

 

Other transitions

Veerendra Sharma transitioned roles. He was previously a postdoc with the Cook lab working on CRISPR-Cas13 technology to develop it as a platform of transcript silencing. He is now working in the Trick lab working with genome editing and tissue culture of wheat and soybean. Veer is originally from a small city called Jhansi in India & received his degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Outside of work, he enjoys listening to music, playing cricket, and fitness training. His favorite holiday is Christmas as he gets a chance to visit with old friends. 

 

Trevor Rife transitioned roles and moved from a post doc to a Research Assistant Professor. Trevor is originally from Torrington, Wyoming. He started his K-State career in 2011 as a graduate student working on wheat genomics and mobile app development for plant breeding. These projects led to a post-doc position with a focus on expanding and developing those apps for a global audience. Now, as a research faculty member, he will continue to build on this solid foundation and work to modernize plant breeding programs around the world by optimizing data collection, management, and analysis. Outside of work, he enjoys video games, cooking, woodworking, and gardening. His favorite holiday is any three day weekend he gets to spend with his family at the cabin in the mountains or at a lake. 

 

Jared Crain also transitioned roles from a postdoc to Research Assistant Professor. Jared is originally from Woodward, Oklahoma, and earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in plant and soil science from Oklahoma State University. In 2016, he completed his doctoral degree in genetics here at Kansas State University under Jesse Poland. Since then, Jared has collaborated with The Land Institute in Salina, KS to develop genomic prediction models and implement a yearly selection timeline, cutting the breeding cycle timeline in half for immediate wheatgrass. As Jared moves into a Research Assistant Professor role, he will continue genomic selection efforts in intermediate wheatgrass as well as leading research to implement new genomic and phenomic tools in perennial crop breeding. He will also continue work on perennial crops with collaborators at USDA in Utah, University of Minnesota, and University of Kansas. When he’s not working, he enjoys reading and walking. His favorite summer treat is ice cream and his favorite holiday is Christmas because of all the food and family gatherings. 

 

Bliss BetzenBliss Betzen started her USDA-APHIS-PPQ career in 2015 as a part-time Biological Science Technician in the PPDI lab during her undergraduate at Kansas State University. Since then she recently graduated with her M.S. in Genetics from Kansas State University in the Plant Pathology department. Bliss has continued her work in plant pathology working with Craig and has transitioned into her role as the new Plant Pathologist-Domestic Identifier. Working with Craig over the years, Bliss has received training, teaching opportunities, networking experience, and has helped to train other young scientists. She is excited to carry on these traditions and is looking forward to creating new partnerships and maintaining lasting relationships with the Plant Pathology community.

 

Craig WebbA final important transition to note: Craig Webb has served as the Plant Pathologist-Domestic Identifier (PPDI) for USDA-APHIS-PPQ since 2004. The position was the first of its kind in the U.S. and over the years, strong relationships have been forged with NPDN, Kansas State University, and state partners while planning for and managing plant pathogens of federal regulatory significance. The history of hiring and providing unique molecular diagnostic training to K-State undergrads who go on to work in relevant areas of science is one of the most satisfying parts of his career. Holding adjunct faculty status, Craig has guest lectured in a number of courses and workshops taught by Plant Pathology department. Earlier this year, after 25 years of residing in Manhattan, Craig and his wife Deb packed up and moved to a house on five acres in rural Douglas County, KS near Clinton Reservoir after he accepted the position as the USDA-APHIS-PPQ State Plant Health Director (SPHD) for Kansas and Nebraska. His office is now located in Topeka, KS. You will still be seeing Craig around occasionally during his visits to the laboratory and he is happy to assist with regulatory/permitting issues that may arise.

 

In memory

Donald Lee StutevilleThe department is saddened to report that Donald Lee Stuteville, professor emeritus in the Department of Plant Pathology at Kansas State University, died June 9, 2021, at age 90. 

From 1959 to 1961, with the aid of a National Science Fellowship Award, Don earned a master’s degree in agriculture at Kansas State, with research involving alfalfa pathology. Following his thesis seminar, faculty member Dr. Leon Edmunds asked Don his plans and suggested that he attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison to obtain a Ph.D. degree. 

In 1964, Don received his Ph.D. degree in plant pathology under the direction of Dr. Earle Hanson. His dissertation was titled “Virus Diseases of Red Clover.” That same year, he accepted an assistant professorship at Kansas State University. He was responsible for  teaching and pathology research on turf, fruits, and vegetables. Later, Don was asked to join an alfalfa-improvement team composed of USDA Breeder Edgar Sorensen (Don’s advisor for his master’s research) and entomologists to develop pest- and disease-resistant cultivars and germplasms. Don worked at Kansas State for 39 years, retiring in 2003. During his career, Don authored and co-authored dozens of publications related to his area of specialization, alfalfa downy mildew. He co-authored and co-edited the first edition of the Compendium of Alfalfa Diseases published by APS PRESS. In 1991, he developed the Standard Tests to Characterize Alfalfa Cultivars for Downy Mildew Resistance. He frequently served as a reviewer for Phytopathology, Plant Disease, and Crop Science. In retirement, Don was frequently seen in the department hallways as he continued to screen alfalfa germplasm lines for downy mildew resistance. 

Don was a member of The American Phytopathological Society and secretary of the Central Alfalfa Improvement Conference. Other professional memberships included Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Alpha Zeta, Sigma Xi, and the Crop Science Society of America.
