Emmy Meyer-Pratt is an alumni of K-State Polytechnic Campus. She double majored in Family Studies and Human Services (FSHS) as well as Personal Financial Planning (PFP). She completed both degrees in four years. She is currently the Treasurer of the Board of Education/Assistant Business Manager for USD 306 Southeast of Saline School District.
Emmy chose K-State Polytechnic because she was born and raised near Salina, KS and wanted to stay close to her family and save as much money as possible while attending school by living with her family. Although Emmy was in the age range of a traditional student she stated that she felt she was more of a non-traditional student as she did not live on campus and worked full time while also going to school full time. She stated, “K-State Polytechnic is a unique campus with a non-traditional feel, so I felt very at home there! Even though I was in general education classes as a freshman, the class sizes didn’t feel overwhelming like I have heard it can be on large university campuses. Along with the class sizes being small & intimate, the wide variety of people and age differences really impacted me. I loved learning from the diverse group as everyone was so different and could share experiences or comment during class.”
Emmy chose the dual FSHS/PFP majors because it combined her love of working with people with her love of math. She stated that the interpersonal communication skills and theories of the FSHS program helped her grow as a PFP major. She feels that K-State Polytechnic has “some of the best professors and administrative staff. They are thoughtful, caring, and very open-armed to everyone on campus!” She noted that both programs prepared her for working in her current position. In particular, the FSHS program taught her interpersonal skills and professionalism.
When asked about advice for students considering a dual FSHS/PFP degree, Emmy stated that if an individual loves people and finance the dual major is the best option. She noted that double majoring “is not an easy feat, but if you can do it, you will not regret your decision! It is such an empowering life lesson to go through both programs. It really makes you grow as an individual more than you probably thought was possible.”
When asked if she had any additional thoughts about her experience at K-State Polytechnic she said, “A huge thank you to all of my professors, mentors, advisors, and especially my husband and family who helped me along my educational journey! It has empowered me more than I thought possible! It feels amazing to be a graduate of KSU Salina!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! GO WILDCATS!!!”
