In Fall 2013, the Office of International Programs announced a new scholarship specifically for first year students called the Freshmen Education Abroad Scholarship.   The goal of this scholarship is twofold; it is meant to encourage enrollment in Global Issues and Perspectives classes on campus and to encourage participation on study abroad programs, especially for those who may otherwise be unable to afford such an experience.  Interim Associate Provost of Kansas State University International Programs, Dr. Marcelo Sabates, believes initiatives such as this scholarship are key in providing opportunities for educating competitive and globally aware Kansas State graduates.  Dr. Sabates continues in saying, “In the 21^st century global competencies are essential to becoming a competitive and educated college graduate.  Exposing freshman to international classes and study abroad opportunities is a strategic way of ensuring that those global competencies are achieved during a student’s time here at K-State.  This scholarship is a novel way of making students aware of the international opportunities at K-State from day one.” Continue reading “Scholarship for Freshmen Encourages Study Abroad Participation” →

Study Abroad Mentors (SAM) is a student organization dedicated to promoting study abroad and international travel.  Though most members are either returned students or students looking for additional guidance before they leave for their trip, we welcome anyone who is passionate about international cooperation and creating a global discourse.

Among the numerous agreements Kansas State has with various universities across the world is an exchange agreement with Linnaeus University (formerly Växjö University) in Växjö, Sweden. The nature of the agreement with Linnaeus University (LNU) is a Bilateral Exchange Agreement – meaning K-State is allowed to send students to study at Linnaeus for K-State costs and vice-versa for Linnaeus University and LNU costs. Since the partnership between K-State and Linnaeus (then Växjö University) began in 2002 the universities have exchanged nearly 30 students including Sara Hallengren, from Karlskrona, Sweden, in the fall semester of 2012 and Logan Gauby, from Washington, KS, during the same semester.

It would be my best guess that, in more instances than not, smartphones have become more of a daily (maybe even hourly) routine for a lot of people – and that isn’t always a bad thing considering the sheer amount of information now available at our fingertips. Scrolling through and browsing the list of applications available it is obvious there are apps for nearly every facet of one’s life that you could hope for… including traveling!
