Couple and Family Therapy

A message from our program director

During this past year a number of students and faculty in the couple and family therapy program have experienced the loss of a loved one. A loss we share as a program is the loss of Candy Russell who died in April after a long battle with P.L.S. Candy was a founding faculty member of the program and her impact on the program, faculty, and alumni is incalculable. Included in this newsletter is a beautiful tribute to Candy written by Sandi Stith.

The process of grieving draws our attention to what is most important in our lives as we remember our loved ones, the treasured relationships we had with them, and the impact that they will continue to have in our lives. We also feel an increased awareness of and gratitude for our current relationships and the support and healing that comes from those connections. It has been inspiring to me this past year to observe how students and faculty have reached out to each other in love and support. I am grateful to be part of a program where the value of relationships is not just taught but lived.

This e-newsletter offers a glimpse into some of the notable events of the past year including another set of outstanding new masters and doctoral students, gainfully employed graduates who are already making an impact on the world, an extensive list of awards and honors received by students and graduates, an excellent Tony Jurich Lecture on Social Justice by our own alumnus CJ Adduci, updates on the family center, and updates on our School and College.

We look forward another wonderful year of growth and learning.

Changes in College of Health and Human Sciences

On June 1, 2019 the College of Human Ecology became the College of Health and Human Sciences. While the name is new, the college will still offer the same programs it has always offered. Our hope is that with a new name, our college becomes more recognizable at the national level and becomes easier for prospective students to understand what our college has to offer.

Sonya Lutter, associate professor of personal financial planning, was named the interim director of the School of Family Studies and Human Services following the departure of Dottie Durband. Dr. Lutter officially took over her duties in July of 2018. Lutter received her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Kansas State University and her doctorate from Texas Tech University.
