It is a pleasure to announce the recipient of the 2016 NAE4-HA 4-H Military Partnership Award, Brent Broaddus, a Regional Specialized 4-H Youth Development Faculty member in the Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences at the University of Florida.

The National Association of Extension 4-H Agents (NAE4-HA) 4-H Military Partnership Award is a collaboration of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, 4-H National Headquarters and Army Child, Youth and School Services, Air Force Child and Youth Programs, and Navy Child and Youth Programs. These USDA and Military Partnerships have a long history of successful programs for military connected children and youth who live on and off installations. The 4-H Military Partnership honors an individual or team each year with the NAE4-HA 4-H Military Partnership Award. Brent Broaddus, the 2016 recipient, received the NAE4-HA Military Partnership Award at the NAE4-HA Conference on October 13, 2016, for his support of military connected youth and their families in Florida and Europe. Brent has been instrumental in establishing 4-H clubs at MacDill Air Force Base and connecting geographically dispersed military youth with 4-H in Hillsborough County. Brent’s professional development trainings in Europe span five countries and eleven Air Force bases, providing unique professional development experiences and resources for Air Force Youth Programs staff. Brent’s enthusiasm for science and communication was captured in a statement from a MacDill parent: “4-H has made my daughter question a lot more and always ask the question ‘Why?’ and “How does that work?’ I have a more inquisitive and science aware daughter because of 4-H!”  Brent’s dedication to military youth and families, commitment to excellence, and attention to detail is exemplary.  Congratulations Brent!

“Maker Movement, Horticulture Fusion”

Within the Maker Movement, there is a new trend developing with a tie to agriculture and gardening. Known as “geek gardening,” it refers to gardening enhanced with technology-focused methods to increase the production of plant products or to solve issues such as irrigation or pest control. Dave will identify and showcase this movement and a variety of these Makers and their innovations for awareness throughout Cooperative Extension.

Bringing Social and Emotional Learning to the Forefront: What Happens When Districts Prioritize SEL?

It is hard to ignore the buzz around social and emotional learning (SEL) and the research findings documenting the value of SEL programs for student behavior and academic gains. However, what does SEL look like in practice? Specifically, what can district and school leaders do to promote SEL? With the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), states and districts can consider measures of SEL within their accountability systems. However, measurement of SEL alone is not sufficient to support student development. Leaders can do more to embed SEL within current district and school priorities. In this 75-minute webinar, cohosted by American Institutes for Research (AIR), American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF), the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and the Washoe County School District, we will hear from a panel of researchers and practitioners on ways in which districts and school leaders have implemented a coordinated and purposeful SEL effort.
