2023 Tri-State Cow Calf Symposium Planned for Jan. 27th

 

BIRD CITY, KS – The 2023 Tri-State Cow Calf Symposium will be Friday, January 27th in Bird City, Kansas. This event is produced by K-State Research and Extension, Nebraska Extension, and Colorado State University Extension and rotates between the three states. The symposium will focus on adapting in times of uncertainty and more specifically consider the strains that drought has put on producers in the tri-state area.

Check-in will begin at 9:30 am CT allowing for time to visit with vendors, sponsors, and for refreshments. The program will begin at 10 am CT starting with a market outlook by Dustin Pendell, K-State Research and Extension, ag economist, who will also lead discussion on the economics behind cull-cow and drought feeding decisions.

Short term forage considerations will come next, presented by Jerry Volesky, University of Nebraska Extension Range & Forage Specialist.

Following lunch and time to visit with vendors, Chip Redmond, Assistant Agronomist Incident Meteorologist for Kansas Forest Service will lead a weather outlook for attendees to better understand what weather may be in store for the coming months.

The day will finish with a producer panel “Planning and Pivoting for Drought” moderated by Keith Harmoney, K-State Research and Extension range scientist, to allow attendees to consider their own plans for the coming growing season. Panel members will include Dan Larson – owner and operator of Larson Angus Ranch (Sharon Springs, Kansas) and Robert Brosius – manager at Maddux Cattle Company (Imperial, Nebraska) to share how they managed cattle through the previous year’s drought and what they plan to do in the future. The program is set to adjourn at 2:00 pm CT.

The program will be held at the American Legion Hall at 113 W Fourth Street, Bird City, Kansas. The cost to register is $15, and $10 for youth/students. The fee covers refreshments, lunch and proceedings.
