Dr. Emma Briggs is the new Beef Production Systems Scientist (70% research and 30% extension) and assistant professor at the Kansas State University Agricultural Research Center in Hays, Kansas. In this role, she collaborates with range scientists and agronomists, leveraging a cow herd and feedlot to conduct applied research that directly supports Kansas cattle producers. Through this hands-on approach, Brigg’s aims to generate valuable insights and practical solutions tailored to the needs of the industry. Her goal is to advance the mission of the land grant system by engaging with communities through extension and research. Her primary research objective is to improve the efficiency and adaptability of beef cattle, addressing critical challenges within the livestock industry. Through innovative practices and strategies, she aims to enhance productivity and sustainability, ultimately contributing to the overall advancement of the sector.
Emma grew up on her family’s commercial cow-calf operation in Northern California. She was actively involved in 4-H and FFA programs during her youth. She earned a B.S. in Animal Science from California State University, Fresno, followed by an M.S. in Animal Science from Colorado State University, where her research focused on animal breeding and genetics. Emma went on to earn a Ph.D. in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University, specializing in ruminant nutrition.
Emma intends to collaborate with the K-State beef extension team to enhance programming initiatives and effectively disseminate research findings from the Animal Science and Industry Department. She plans to engage with stakeholders across the sector, conducting applied beef systems research aimed at driving meaningful improvements in the livestock industry.
