How Does Estrus Synchronization Work?
Sandy Johnson, extension beef specialist, Colby
As we go through each breeding season, questions arise about changes, intentional or otherwise, regarding various synchronization protocols. What if I gave X rather than Y, or did something on day W rather than day Z; will it matter? In order to understand how estrus synchronization works and the importance of what happens in each step, a basic understanding of the tools used and how they influence the components of the estrous cycle is needed. Is Newer Better? The 7 & 7 Synch Protocol
By Sandy Johnson, extension beef specialist, Colby
Twenty plus years ago, when ovulation synchronization protocols first produced industry acceptable pregnancy rates from a single fixed time insemination there was concern if the three handlings needed would still be viewed as too much hassle. The 2017 NAHMS survey shows use of AI trending up compared to earlier surveys, especially in herds sizes of 200 or more and in the Central region. Now after years of good success, would a protocol with an additional handling be worth it? The level of “hassle” for an AI program differs for each operation based on several factors but includes facilities and labor and perhaps attitude towards working cows. This article reviews data from synchronization protocols using 3 or 4 handlings. Continue reading “Is Newer Better? The 7 & 7 Synch Protocol”

Estrus Synchronization Planner Makes AI Planning Easier
By Sandy Johnson, Extension Beef Specialist, Colby
Increasingly producers are taking advantage of the benefits of artificial insemination (AI) made more successful and more convenient to apply with the current protocols available for synchronization of estrus and ovulation. Optimal reproductive performance relies on good year-round management. However, the best managed cows won’t respond if errors are made in implementing a synchronization system. A tool called the Estrus Synchronization Planner was designed to help producers correctly execute synchronization protocols to achieve the best possible response.
The Estrus Synchronization Planner is an Excel based program that steps users through protocol selection based on inputs of the type of cattle, amount of heat detection desired and the breeding date and time. Continue reading “Estrus Synchronization Planner Makes AI Planning Easier”
