When the local grocery store closed after 100 years in business, dedicated new owners created a way to honor the rich history of the community, provide groceries, and social opportunities to community members in the area surrounding the Southeast Kansas town of Mildred. The Mildred store hosts a monthly music night that brings together neighbors and friends to share in food, entertainment, and connection. The Kansas Healthy Food Initiative funding helped to provide matching funds needed to upgrade equipment to increase energy efficiency and reduce utility bills.
