Data Corner: Today’s graduate students

As Graduate School alumni with backgrounds in research, we know many of you may have a strong interest in data. We want to share data with you on K-State’s graduate student population, as you might be interested to know about changes in our enrollment and the background of our students.

Since 2019, there has been a 2.8 percent increase in our overall graduate enrollment, with 4,156 total students enrolled in Fall 2023.

Among those students, 2,394 are females and 1,762 are males.

The number of graduate students over 40 has gradually grown from 719 students in 2018 to 869 in 2023 – a 20.8 percent increase. These data suggest a growing number of students pursuing a graduate degree after spending time in the workforce.

The skills and abilities needed in today’s workforce are constantly changing. Earning a graduate degree is a way to retool one’s professional portfolio, and the trends in our enrollment data suggest a growing interest and need for graduate education so that people can advance or shift their professional focus.

Altogether, this year, we have graduate students representing 100 Kansas counties, all 50 States, and 73 other countries.

The Graduate School has seen enrollment growth in various student demographics. While the growth we’ve seen is welcomed and encouraging for the Graduate School, we’re continually working to increase those numbers.
