Introducing Kyler Wineinger

Imagine coming from a high school with about 100 students to a major university with more than 20,000 students. Kyler Wineinger, a junior from Tribune, KS, made this transition to Kansas State University after graduating from Greeley County High School.

Wineinger is pursuing a general management degree and has always been interested in business. In high school he was able to take an accounting course, which he described as a “getting my toes in the water” type of introductory business class. The location of K-State is what attracted him the most.

With family in Topeka and grandparents that live about an hour away from Manhattan, Wineinger is in close proximity to his family. He also knew friends who already were attending K-State, which also helped in his transition to the university. Since starting his business major, he has had no problems getting involved.

Within the College of Business Administration, Wineinger participates in Professional Advantage events and is matched with an Executive Mentor. He likes the breadth of opportunities Professional Advantage provides, ranging from interview skills, resume checks, and other useful seminars. One of the most memorable PA events is negotiating salaries because it provided important items to consider when settling on a base salary with your employer.

Meet Kelly Gawlak

Combining accounting, graphic design and playing guitar is one unique combination of interests. Kelly Gawlak, a junior from Wichita, blends all three together to shape her K-State experience.

She began her K-State academic career as a graphic design major. Her interest in the field stemed from her involvement with the student newspaper in high school and working with design programs. She eventually realized that graphic design was more of a hobby and not something she would want to do as a full-time career.

“After finishing my freshman year I really felt like it wasn’t where I was supposed to be and I did a lot of research. I basically went through K-State’s list of majors in every college and narrowed it down to what I’d be good at,” said Gawlak.

Gawlak consulted a few students she knew pursuing an accounting degree and decided to declare the major. She likes accounting because the discipline is meticulous and detail oriented, just like graphic design. Gawlak is still able to use her graphic design skills to create banners and signs for the Professional Advantage Program. She likes having the opportunity to create graphics and come up with themes in a less stressful environment.

Helpful Hints for Juniors

The 2013-14 academic calendar year is more than halfway through and it’s hard to believe that Spring Break is right around the corner! As you get ready to wish your senior students farewell, you can start advising juniors on their college search process.

Here are a couple tips you can pass along to your juniors who are getting ready to start visiting colleges (if they haven’t already started):

  • Schedule a campus visit. K-State offers a variety of visit programs from high school students.
  • Regular campus visits are offered year round and students can schedule their visit by calling 785-532-6250.
  • Junior Days allow students to explore K-State through academic sessions, student life, dining in a residence hall, and more. Five sessions are offered during the Spring 2014 semester.
  • CBA Day is the College of Business Administration’s special visit days, where future student attend business courses, meet with business students, faculty, and staff, and learn more about K-State business majors.
  • Ask about financial aid and scholarships. K-State offers numerous scholarships to incoming freshmen each year, so it’s essential for your students to remember to meet the priority scholarship application deadline of November 1 during their senior year.
  • Explore housing options. Future K-State student should look into on-campus residence halls, Greek Life, and off-campus housing options available to them.
  • Engage in the campus environment. College is much more than just going to class and studying. K-State students are able to join one of the more than 475 clubs and organizations and first-year students are encouraged to participate in K-State First.
If you are interested in exploring a possible class visit with the K-State College of Business Administration, please call 785-532-6030 or email Recruitment Coordinator, Curtis Morisaki, at cym@k-state.edu. For general university group visits, please contact the Office of Admissions at 785-532-6250 or email groupvisit@k-state.edu

Entrepreneurship and K-State Launch

Ideas for new businesses are constantly in motion. Luckily K-State students majoring in business and other academic disciplines have the opportunity to utilize resources that can assist their entrepreneurial ideas.

The Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship was founding in 2008 with the goal of promoting entrepreneurship throughout the K-State campus and local community. The Center offers students both academic and non-academic experiences.

Since 2010, K-State students have had an opportunity to participate in K-State Launch, an entrepreneurship idea competition. More than $20,000 annually is awarded to the best K-State Launch ideas. Students submit an executive summary of their business idea and plan and judges select finalists. Finalists present in front of the judges at the K-State Launch finals on March 11.

K-State students can also take advantage of the Venture Accelerator, which is work space right across the street from campus. The Venture Incubator assists students with their entrepreneurial ideas and helps students start their own business.

Stay tuned for a future post covering the winning K-State Launch ideas.
