Important Senior Reminders

It’s hard to believe that we have entered a new school year. For your graduating class of 2015 students there are a couple important fall tasks they should complete if they are planning to attend K-State next August. Here is a breakdown of the suggested fall timeline for incoming class of 2015 students. In January a timeline for the spring time will be published on this newsletter.

September and October 2014: Apply for admission and scholarships at K-State. You can find the online application here.

November 1, 2014: Priority deadline for incoming freshman students to submit their K-State scholarship application. K-State offers a variety of scholarship awards to incoming students and more information on scholarships can be found here.

November and December 2014: Complete the K-State housing application. Students can apply for housing anytime after they have been admitted to K-State. More information on residence halls and the application can be found here.

Senior Ingrid Perez

After growing up in urban Kansas City, Ingrid Perez, a senior in human resource management, has made the most of her opportunities at Kansas State.

Perez will be the first person in her family to graduate from college when she walks across the stage in December 2014. She credits part of her current and future success to the people and programs at K-State, getting a head start to her college education by participating in the Multicultural Academic Program Success (MAPS) Program. The program allowed her to meet professors and business professionals before she started her first fall semester at K-State. Dr. Dawne Martin coordinates the MAPS Program for College of Business Administration students and was influential in Perez’s decision to attend K-State and be a part of MAPS.

Introducing Kyler Wineinger

Imagine coming from a high school with about 100 students to a major university with more than 20,000 students. Kyler Wineinger, a junior from Tribune, KS, made this transition to Kansas State University after graduating from Greeley County High School.

Wineinger is pursuing a general management degree and has always been interested in business. In high school he was able to take an accounting course, which he described as a “getting my toes in the water” type of introductory business class. The location of K-State is what attracted him the most.

With family in Topeka and grandparents that live about an hour away from Manhattan, Wineinger is in close proximity to his family. He also knew friends who already were attending K-State, which also helped in his transition to the university. Since starting his business major, he has had no problems getting involved.

Within the College of Business Administration, Wineinger participates in Professional Advantage events and is matched with an Executive Mentor. He likes the breadth of opportunities Professional Advantage provides, ranging from interview skills, resume checks, and other useful seminars. One of the most memorable PA events is negotiating salaries because it provided important items to consider when settling on a base salary with your employer.

Meet Kelly Gawlak

Combining accounting, graphic design and playing guitar is one unique combination of interests. Kelly Gawlak, a junior from Wichita, blends all three together to shape her K-State experience.

She began her K-State academic career as a graphic design major. Her interest in the field stemed from her involvement with the student newspaper in high school and working with design programs. She eventually realized that graphic design was more of a hobby and not something she would want to do as a full-time career.

“After finishing my freshman year I really felt like it wasn’t where I was supposed to be and I did a lot of research. I basically went through K-State’s list of majors in every college and narrowed it down to what I’d be good at,” said Gawlak.

Gawlak consulted a few students she knew pursuing an accounting degree and decided to declare the major. She likes accounting because the discipline is meticulous and detail oriented, just like graphic design. Gawlak is still able to use her graphic design skills to create banners and signs for the Professional Advantage Program. She likes having the opportunity to create graphics and come up with themes in a less stressful environment.

Helpful Hints for Juniors

The 2013-14 academic calendar year is more than halfway through and it’s hard to believe that Spring Break is right around the corner! As you get ready to wish your senior students farewell, you can start advising juniors on their college search process.

Here are a couple tips you can pass along to your juniors who are getting ready to start visiting colleges (if they haven’t already started):

  • Schedule a campus visit. K-State offers a variety of visit programs from high school students.
  • Regular campus visits are offered year round and students can schedule their visit by calling 785-532-6250.
  • Junior Days allow students to explore K-State through academic sessions, student life, dining in a residence hall, and more. Five sessions are offered during the Spring 2014 semester.
  • CBA Day is the College of Business Administration’s special visit days, where future student attend business courses, meet with business students, faculty, and staff, and learn more about K-State business majors.
  • Ask about financial aid and scholarships. K-State offers numerous scholarships to incoming freshmen each year, so it’s essential for your students to remember to meet the priority scholarship application deadline of November 1 during their senior year.
  • Explore housing options. Future K-State student should look into on-campus residence halls, Greek Life, and off-campus housing options available to them.
  • Engage in the campus environment. College is much more than just going to class and studying. K-State students are able to join one of the more than 475 clubs and organizations and first-year students are encouraged to participate in K-State First.
If you are interested in exploring a possible class visit with the K-State College of Business Administration, please call 785-532-6030 or email Recruitment Coordinator, Curtis Morisaki, at cym@k-state.edu. Entrepreneurship and K-State Launch

Ideas for new businesses are constantly in motion. Luckily K-State students majoring in business and other academic disciplines have the opportunity to utilize resources that can assist their entrepreneurial ideas.

The Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship was founding in 2008 with the goal of promoting entrepreneurship throughout the K-State campus and local community. The Center offers students both academic and non-academic experiences.

Since 2010, K-State students have had an opportunity to participate in K-State Launch, an entrepreneurship idea competition. More than $20,000 annually is awarded to the best K-State Launch ideas. Students submit an executive summary of their business idea and plan and judges select finalists. Finalists present in front of the judges at the K-State Launch finals on March 11.

K-State students can also take advantage of the Venture Accelerator, which is work space right across the street from campus. The Venture Incubator assists students with their entrepreneurial ideas and helps students start their own business.

Stay tuned for a future post covering the winning K-State Launch ideas.

Business Curriculum Preparation

We want you to learn more about the K-State College of Business curriculum. By knowing what our requirements are you will be able to correctly advise your students on which courses to take and how they can be best-prepared for a K-State business major.

K-State business majors are required to complete a minimum of 126 credit hours to graduate with any of the six business majors. The credits are divided into three main categories (Business Administration Pre-Profession requirements, Business Core courses, and Business Major courses). If you have students that are taking Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB),  College Now, or community or four-year college courses, they have the opportunity to transfer those credits to K-State.

Almost all student’s previous credits transferred in before starting at K-State will fall under the Business Administration Pre-Profession (BAPP) requirements. Please review our BAPP curriculum worksheet to review the required non-business courses a business major must complete. Quite a number of students enter K-State with credit, so your students can use our BAPP guide to plug in courses they may already have credit for.

K-State business majors are required to take several communication and quantitative courses. When you work with students interested in pursuing a business major, you can advise them that business students need Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, College Algebra, Calculus I, two business statistics courses, Public Speaking, and two English composition courses. If students want to get ahead on the business curriculum requirements, they might be interested in completing some of the courses listed above before starting at K-State.

For specific details on how AP and IB credits for each respective exam transfer to K-State, please review the information provided by the Office of Admissions. Before your incoming students meet with a business academic advisor they will have the opportunity to list all previous work they have completed for college credit. Just be sure to remind your students to send in any AP or IB scores and transcripts so they receive the appropriate credit at K-State.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Info

Senior students you teach and work with may have questions about financial aid and scholarships. We know that college is a big investment and many students rely on scholarships and financial aid to pay for their education.

When a student completes their application for admission at K-State they have the opportunity to complete the general scholarship application. This application is used by the Office of Admissions to award merit and leadership-based scholarships. For more information on all general university scholarships available to incoming freshman, please visit the K-State Admissions scholarship page. Your student will be notified by admissions if he/she received a general university scholarship.

The College of Business Administration also awards scholarships to incoming students. The information from the scholarship application your student filled out during the application process is forwarded to the college/department he/she applied to and college-level scholarships are awarded in the spring.

Students interested in accounting have the opportunity to complete a separate scholarship application. The accounting-specific scholarship application becomes available in January and is due on February 1. All students who have been admitted to K-State for business will receive an email invitation to complete the accounting scholarship application.

Remember to let your senior students know that they can start completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on January 1, 2014 and the priority filing deadline for K-State is March 1. Students can learn more about financial aid by reviewing information from our Office of Student Financial Assistance website.

Please let us know if you have students with questions regarding scholarships or financial aid at K-State. We are happy to answer questions or put students in contact with individuals on campus who can help your student out.
