Regional & Community Planning Program Welcomes New Faculty Member

The Regional & Community Planning Program is happy to announce that Greg Newmark will be joining its faculty in the Fall as an assistant professor.

Newmark completed his doctorate in City and Regional Planning in 2011 at the University of California, Berkeley. Since then he has worked in Chicago, initially for the Regional Transportation Authority and currently at the Center for Neighborhood Technology. He specializes in policies to improve the sustainability of transportation at both the system and individual scale.

To date, his research has largely systematized understudied facets of transportation planning or explored individual travel behavior – both in the service of policy formation.

While working at the Center for Neighborhood Technology, Newmark was also an adjunct lecturer at the University of Chicago where he taught courses focusing on skill development (quantitative methods, communication) and area content (transportation policy).

“I seek to help budding planners gain the knowledge (and the jobs) to confidently, collaboratively, and creatively engage in improving communities,” Newmark said. “I view every interaction with students as an opportunity to pursue this goal – whether in the classroom, mentoring research, or career advising – and work thoughtfully to best advance learning outcomes.”

Born and raised in the midwest, Greg and his wife are looking forward to to living in Manhattan.

“I was really attracted to the warmth of the faculty and the opportunity to teach in a college town where students are coming to learn full time,” Newmark said. “Also, I am looking forward to developing the transportation portion of the program.”

The department warmly welcomes Greg, and is looking forward to having Greg’s wealth of knowledge on transportation added to its curriculum.
