The school year is off to a great start with events within and outside the classroom and plenty of students to attend them. The department began fall semester with a record-breaking number of 30 new students in the agricultural communications and journalism major: 7 transfers from other majors, 5 transfers from other institutions and 18 freshmen. Overall, there is now a historic high of 83 students in the major.

Summer break presents an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world experiences. This past summer, students in the department held internships in many areas of the industry, including government, extension, production, organizations and associations.
Nathan Laudan, a senior agricultural communications and journalism major, was one of 39 students from around the nation interning for Monsanto.

“We take a lot of things for granted in our U.S. ag production systems,” says Jason Ellis of his recent trip to Guatemala. Ellis, associate professor of agricultural communications and journalism, and his team are actively working to improve the livelihoods of Guatemalan agriculturalists. The initiative is one of four grants awarded to Kansas State University from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and it aims to reduce post-harvest loss and food waste in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana and Guatamala. Four K-State Agricultural Communicator of Tomorrow (ACT) members and one nervous graduate student drove 600 miles to attend the 2014 Agricultural Media Summit (AMS). This was not my first AMS; in fact, it was my fifth. It was, however, the first time this California native attended as a K-State student. It was also my first time being responsible for conference travel details.
Kate Hagans, Nicole Lane, Malerie Strahm and Briana Jacobus rode with me to the summit in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Maggie Seiler flew in from her internship at Hoard’s Dairyman in Wisconsin to join us. Logan Britton was already in Indianapolis, where he interned for the National FFA Organization. Despite my fears of locking the keys in the school van, being late to the opening social and having a glitch with the hotel reservation, we pulled it all off and took away some prestigious honors.
Industry professionals and students from across the nation were introduced to Logan Britton, who was presented with the esteemed Forrest Bassford Student Award.

On the Education Side: In addition to recognizing teachers for their years of service, The Kansas Association of Agricultural Editors (KAAE) recognizes outstanding agriculture teachers. Congratulations to our agricultural education alumni honored this summer!
Some of our alumni earned further recognition by being honored by the Kansas Association for Career and Technical Education (K-ACTE).
Alumni were also nominated for national recognition from the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE):
Linda Chase won the National Agriscience Teacher of the Year for the region. Jacqueline Gabbert ‘09 was awarded the National Teachers Turn the Key Scholarship.
On the Communication Side: The Livestock Publication Council and American Agricultural Editors Association recognized outstanding industry professionals at the 2014 Ag Media Summit July 26—30 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
