Hello, ArtSci students!

In this issue of A&S Matters, our new eNewsletter for ArtSci students, there is a lot of great information, including tips on how to make yourself marketable to employers, scholarship opportunities, as well as some exciting events and important dates of which you should be aware.

In addition, I want to draw your attention to the K-State Climate Survey, which will open on Oct. 14. This is an opportunity for you to share your voice and opinion on K-State. What is a university climate? It’s defined as, “the current attitudes, behaviors, standards and practices of employees and students of an institution.” A university’s climate is often shaped through personal experiences, perceptions and institutional efforts.

In order for this to have the strongest positive impact on K-State, we need everyone to participate. Please take this important survey, which opens on Oct. 14, and be sure to encourage your classmates and friends to do the same. Click here to take the survey.

Make yourself marketable
As you prepare to apply for internships and jobs, it is important to be able to clearly state why you would be an asset for an organization. Of course, you’ll be well versed in your primary area of study, but a degree from the College of Arts & Sciences adds value to your major(s). Take a look at this page on our website, which provides a big picture view of what a degree from our college provides, complete with key words and concepts you can use in your interview!

Your Voice: A Stronger K-State
This is your opportunity to have an impact on the future of K-State. Be sure to take the K-State Climate Survey, beginning on Oct. 14. Click to find out more.

Graduating in December?
Commencement is a big deal, full of family, friends and fun. Be sure you plan accordingly. What time do you need to be there? Where should you park? What if it’s cold and you have a big coat…what can you do with it? What should you wear? We’ve put together a helpful webpage with details to help you make plans. Scholarships

Passionate about environmental issues?
The Udall Scholarship ($5,000) is for undergraduates with the commitment to be future leaders in environmental fields. Competitive applicants, regardless of major, will be able to show dedication to the environment through their activities and career goals.

Details about the award:

Udall Scholars are awarded $5,000.
Eligible students will graduate between May 2016 and May 2017.
US citizens or permanent residents only.
We can nominate up to six students to compete nationally.
Native American/Alaskan students can also apply for the Udall if they are interested in healthcare or tribal policy. There are no ethnic restrictions for students with environmental career goals.

If you have a strong dedication to environmental issues, please contact Jim Hohenbary (jimlth@k-state.edu) in the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships for more information. The campus deadline for this scholarship is Nov. 7, 2014.
