Join the Beach Museum of Art and specialist Nate McClendon in welcoming celebrated artist Susie J. Lee to Manhattan. This public event will celebrate social art project Manhattan Community Portrait inspired by Lee’s video portrait series Fracking Fields, 2013. In addition to interviews with Lee and McClendon, there will be interactive experiences exploring how we see each other as a community. Support for the event is provided by Art Bridges Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works with museums across the country to increase local access to great American art. Union Hall in Manhattan
serves as the local sponsor for the social art project.

Susie J. Lee

Susie J. Lee is a practicing artist whose work explores intimacy, time and
connection through technology. Recognized as Emerging Artist of the Year
for the “intelligence, emotion and sensuality” of her work, Lee has focused
on the amplification of genuine and spontaneous human connection
through technology.

Lee is a graduate of Yale, Columbia and University of Washington with
degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry, education, and fine arts
She has a unique background as a scientist, educator, entrepreneur, single
mother and artist that feeds into a restless intellectual curiosity that is
ultimately grounded in a strong sense of vocation to positively change the
world in a concrete manner.

Grow Green Match Day: April 22, 2024

12th Annual Grow Green Match Day: April 22nd, 2024
On this day, the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation (GMCF) will match donations made to participating non-profit organizations including the Beach Museum of Art.

Three Simple Ways to Give:

● In-person at Colony Square Atrium (555 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas) on Monday, April 22, 2024, from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

● Online at GrowGreenManhattan.com on Monday, April 22, 2024, from 12:00 AM to 11:59 AM. Read about the Beach Museum of Art here.

● By mailing a check:
Must be postmarked on or before 4/22/2024 and must include a completed 2024 Grow Green Match Day Giving Form. The donation form will be available online after March 11, 2024.

How It Works

Individual contributions ranging from $25 to $1,000 per organization will receive a local match at $.50 per $1, so a $1,000 gift will receive a $500 local match. If a donor gives a $5,000 gift split evenly between five organizations, each group is eligible to receive a $500 match. Combined donations of $15,000 will be matched at 50%, giving a maximum of $7,500 in matching funds to any one organization.

Gifts made by community donors will go directly to each organization for their immediate needs. The match money earned by each non-profit group will be deposited into their GMCF-endowed fund. Some may choose to add all gifts to their endowment.

Each hour, one donor who made a gift at the live event at Colony Square Atrium will be drawn for $100 to give to the participating fund of their choice.

The Beach Museum of Art staff mourns the passing of Marvin Gould

The Beach Museum of Art staff is deeply saddened by the passing of Marvin Gould and extend our sincere sympathies to his loved ones. Marvin worked at the museum for over 20 years as a Gallery Technician and Exhibition Designer and assisted with exhibition design and gallery installations. The museum is grateful to have had Marvin on the team for so many years. He was a good friend and an exceptional artist.

We are pleased to have Marvin’s work Nowhere Fast currently on view. It reminds us that Marvin will always be a part of the Beach Museum of Art.

Beach Museum’s 2021-2022 Gordon Parks exhibition will soon travel to six venues around the country

The exhibition ‘Homeward to the Prairie I Come’: Gordon Parks Photographs from the Beach Museum of Art will soon travel to six venues around the country beginning in the fall of 2024. The museum’s 2021–2022 Gordon Parks exhibition was co-curated by Beach Museum staff Aileen June Wang and Sarah Price. The tour is organized by the Beach Museum with major support from Art Bridges, a foundation led by philanthropist and arts patron Alice Walton, which aims to expand access to American art across the country.

The first stop is Syracuse University Art Museum in August 2024. Co-curator Aileen June Wang will deliver the keynote presentation there in September 2024.

Learn more about the museum’s exhibition and its open-access digital catalog, part of a collaboration with K-State English here. Major support for the catalog comes from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

K-State English maintains the open-access website The Learning Tree: A Gordon Parks Digital Archive, also supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In addition to the traveling exhibition, Curator Aileen June Wang and Gordon Parks Museum Director Kirk Sharp organized a convening in March 2024 for the six host museums in Fort Scott, Kansas, generously supported by Art Bridges, with additional support from Fort Scott Community College and the Gordon Parks Museum. Convening presenters were Andrew F. Scott, associate professor of arts and technology at the University of Texas Dallas, and Beach Museum of Art staff. Beach Museum Specialist Nate McClendon and his band presented an interpretation of the Gordon Parks exhibition through music and narration.

Classes and Workshops

The Museum hosts a variety of classes and workshops throughout the year for all ages!

ARTSmart classes: Explore the current exhibitions. Each class includes looking activities in the galleries and an art project. Classes are held on the first Wednesday and Thursday of the month at 10:30 (ages 2-5) and 4:30 (all ages). Upcoming classes: April 3 & 4: The Artist’s Studio, Painters

Homeschool Tuesdays meet on the first Tuesday of the month allows Homeschool families to investigate the exhibitions and collection with curriculum integration. Tours are appropriate for those in Kindergarten on up and include an art project. Upcoming class: April 2, 1-2:30: The Artist’s Studio, Painters (chance to compare watercolor and acrylic paint)

Cost for each class above is $5 per child. Reservations are required. Payment can be made with cash or check. Please call (785)532-7718 or email klwalk@k-state.edu for reservations. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If you need to cancel your reservation please let us know so we can call those on the waiting list.

Special price for Military Families: In conjunction with the Blue Star Museum program, the Beach Museum of Art offers Military Families half price on all workshops and classes!
