
Students win
For the fifth time in 12 years, K-State students won the championship of the National Collegiate Financial Planning competition. Team members, all seniors in personal financial planning, are Matt Gould, Wende Witthuhn and Kristen Moore.
Ann Coulson, assistant professor in the School of Family Studies and Human Services, was the team’s adviser.
The team won $10,000 for scholarships in the personal financial planning at the nationwide contest in San Antonio. Read more here.
First Ph.D. bestowed
Julie Cumbie is switching places this month. Instead of cheering on her graduating students, assistant professor of finance at the University of Central Oklahoma will walk across the stage in Bramlege Coliseum to receive a diploma.
She is the first graduate from the personal financial planning doctoral program.
Dr. Cumbie’s dissertation was on Three Essays on Money Arguments and Financial Behaviors; her major professors were Sonya Britt and John Grable. She finished her work at K-State this summer. http://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/oct12/finplangrad100112.html
Also walking on Dec. 7 will be the program’s second graduate, Ron Sages. His dissertation was Three Essays on Self-Esteem and Retirement Planning Behavior. His major professors were Britt and Maurice MacDonald.
Wild about Wildcat Night
A spreadsheet full of awards was presented at A Wildcat Night: Celebrating K-State Personal Financial Planning, the program’s first development event.
Kevin R. Keller, chief executive officer of the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) Board of Standards Inc. in Washington, D.C., was keynote speaker for the August event at the K-State Alumni Center.
Among the awardees were Bill Meredith, Kim Misenhelter, Jeff Bratz and Angie Herbers.
Doctoral students present, collaborate in South Korea
The first cohort of Personal Financial Planning Ph.D. students at Kansas State University spent a week in Seoul, South Korea, this spring, presenting their research and collaborating with graduate students at Ewha Woman’s University.
The trip was part of their Ph.D. program that requires one summer session abroad to examine global markets and how financial planning is being developed in other countries. Partnership yields Military Financial Readiness Day
More than 150 Fort Riley soldiers and their families received free, personalized, confidential information from professional financial planners and counselors during a first-of-its-kind collaboration involving a military installation and the financial planning community.
Military Financial Readiness Day resulted from a partnership of K-State’s personal financial program, Fort Riley and several financial organizations.
