When you were choosing programs, why did you choose K-State PFP?
I wanted to be a financial planner since high school. I came to K-State in the business college, majoring in finance as I didn’t know that this program was available. PFP is not in the business college so I didn’t look at any other college offerings and my counselor didn’t mention it. I was talking to someone at a party 2nd semester sophomore year who told me about PFP track. It was perfect fit, and I switched the next day!
What do you remember about your time at K-State?
It was a great time; I met my best friends that we are all still close today. One little thing that really stands out is how great/ kind all the staff were in the PFP program compared to the business school. Since the classes are so much smaller, I was able to interact with the students and staff much closer and become friends. The amount that the faculty actually cared about all the students left a great impression.
How has your education in PFP enhanced your current career path?
Since I wanted to be a financial planner and started right after I graduated, the PFP program helped me excel from day one. I had a leg up on other younger advisor getting started because I had the education knowledge of comprehensive planning vs memorizing some formulas and passing the series exams. Having this knowledge also gave me more confidence when I was talking with prospects as I had the education to back up my conversations.
What recommendations would you make for future financial planners?
This is a great industry, and it is getting better every year. There is a career path for anyone coming out of the PFP college, even if you don’t want to be a client facing planner. I would recommend students to take the time and go job shadow at least 3 different firms and try to get 2 different internships. This will give you a much deeper dive into what it will actually be like to work somewhere every day but more importantly will help you see many different aspects, philosophies and cultures of firms which will then give you the ability to make a much better decision on where you want to start your career when you graduate.
What professional achievements are you most proud of?
I have received recognition as one of the top planners in the area for multiple years, been invited to be a local star for an annual fundraising event for a local charity called “dancing with the Broomfield stars” Yes, it is a spin off the tv show… But I’m most proud that I was able to start a financial planning firm from scratch at 25 and now 5 locations, in which we actively focus on helping advisors retire and give younger advisors a career path that is not sales.
What kinds of things do you do in your community?
I am actively involved in my local Rotary club and have been the youngest member since I joined in 2011, which I hopes ends sooner than later. I have held the position of board member since 2013, President and Foundation President. I have taught financial planning classes at my church and had been on the advisory board chairman.
What are your hobbies/interests?
I moved to Colorado right after graduation to be close to the mountains for outdoor activities as I am an avid skier and now get to each my daughters. I also play golf as much as I can. I have 5- and 7-year-old daughters that keep me busy with all of their activities which are dance and gymnastics.
