News: Donation to fund pilot Series 7 preparation course

The Personal Financial Planning Program has received a $5,000 donation from Edward Jones in St. Louis to conduct an online pilot course for Series 7 Preparation. The Series 7 license is required of all individuals who function as registered representatives within broker-dealer financial service firms.

The course curriculum is being provided in a partnership with Securities Training Corporation (STC) based in New York City and will be taught online by K-State PFP faculty during the fall semester.

The Series 7 Examination, developed and maintained by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), is designed to assess the competency of entry-level general securities representatives. Students who successfully complete the Series 7 Preparation Course will be eligible to sit for the Series 7 examination upon graduation.

Sonya Britt

Sonya Britt, program director, noted that one of the principal initiatives of the Certified Financial Planning Board, apart from administering the CFP® Certification Examination, is to work through university registered programs to facilitate the induction and engagement of recent program graduates into the personal financial planning profession.

“By partnering with Edward Jones and Securities Training Corporation, Kansas State University students will now be even more attractive to prospective employers, as they will have completed educational requirements to sit for two of the most commonly sought-after credentials in the personal financial planning profession,” the associate professor said.

Undergraduate seniors and graduate students may register for the Series 7 Preparation Course (FSHS 700-ZD). For more information contact the course instructor, Ron Sages, PhD, AEP®, CFP®, CTFA, EA at rasages@k-state.edu.
