To the Stars Through Art: A History of Art Collecting in Kansas Public Schools, 1900-1950
August 22, 2023 – May 11, 2024

Watercolor and graphite on paper artwork by Ethel Spears entitled "WPA Cutting Down a Tree." Part of the Beach Museum of Art collection. Featuring a community of workers cutting trees at an intersection in a neighborhood with children playing around and families sitting on grass.

In 1911 the school superintendent in McPherson, Kansas, organized an exhibition to acquire artwork for a new high school. This became an annual ticketed event, allowing the McPherson schools to establish a rich collection of works by regionally and nationally recognized artists, among them James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Birger Sandzén and Fern Coppedge.

Before the mid-century, schools in dozens of Kansas communities, including boarding schools for Indigenous students and segregated schools, joined McPherson in acquiring original art. To the Stars Through Art will feature more than sixty artworks by Blackbear Bosin, Norma Bassett Hall, Walter Ufer and other artists, from more than a dozen schools and history museums across the state.

A goal of the exhibition is to guide Kansas schools in caring for their collections and using art for educational enrichment. The exhibition is being organized by Curator Elizabeth Seaton in collaboration with regional scholars and museum curators.

Beach Museum of Art receives a grant award from Humanities Kansas

The museum staff is pleased to share that Humanities Kansas recently awarded grant support for the exhibition “To the Stars Through Art: A History of Art Collecting in Kansas Public Schools, 1900-1950.” The exhibition has been organized by Curator Elizabeth Seaton in collaboration with regional scholars and museum curators. It is the first survey of art collecting by schools in Kansas and the first study of art acquired by the nation’s schools to give attention to boarding schools for Indigenous students. The exhibition features more than sixty artworks acquired by over a dozen school districts across Kansas.

“The humanities generate ideas,” shared Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas Executive Director. “This unique exhibition project will spark plenty of ideas and invite conversations on the role of art in education.”

The museum staff is grateful for the funding provided by Humanities Kansas, which will support the “To the Stars Through Art” exhibition and related public programs.

Luke Dempsey contributes to a scientific research paper

Beach Museum of Art Exhibition Designer and Technology Lead Luke Dempsey contributes to a scientific research paper with lead author Hasib Mansur, K-State Biological & Agricultural Engineering; Stephen Welch, Agronomy; Daniel Flippo, Biological & Agricultural Engineering.

The open access paper “Importance of Photo-Realistic and Dedicated Simulator in Agricultural Robotics” published in Scientific Research: An Academic Publisher emphasizes the need of a dedicated and specialty simulator for agricultural robotics research.

Hasib Mansur et al. explore the need for a dedicated agricultural robotics simulator that would provide the necessary development tools to robotics engineers for creating more advanced and effective solutions. Dempsey provided guidance on how to solve camera simulation problems like lens distortion, rain-on-lens simulation, and glare minimization. These are all components that affect the performance of robots in the field.
